Which Yardbirds... The Eric Clapton Yardbirds? The Jeff Beck Yardbirds? The Jimmy Page Yardbirds? Have I missed anyone? |

If you want to get technical, you can consider Led Zep the Yardbids since they did their 1st tour as the New Yardbirds before changing their name. My personal favorite is the extremely brief period when both Beck and Page were in the band (even though for awhile I think Page played bass). Great scene in the movie Blow Up where the Beck/Page Yardbirds do Stroll On (Train kept a Rollin with different words) and Beck smashes his guitar (He actually cheats , cause he smashes a cheap Harmony and you know that wasn't his playing axe). Anyone hear the new Yardbirds CD ?. They were playing in London last year when I was there but I had a business meeting. I know Beck guests. |

Okay. We've got some Yardbirds fans. Good. And I'm talking from the Clapton days through the last days with Page (not the "New Yardbirds" or Led Zep): So here is my question. I've been listening for days to the BBC Sessions CD and it dawned on me, why the hell didn't they kick Keith Relf out of the band? He was horrible. Just pathetic. His voice was neither melodic nor bluesy. He was putrid. Bleeeeeeech. If they had kicked Keith out and had replaced him with a guy like Van Morrison, they would have been huge. Have any of you ever listened to the albums by THEM? Morrison was brilliant. THEM was amazing. Or even Eric Burden would have been great. For crying out loud, Peter Noone would have been better. Sheesh. ---> Brought to you by Sbenois Engineering LLC <- Hey, it also wouldn’t look good coming out of a motel with your wife’s best friend saying you were just planning a surprise birthday party for her husband...- Arturo November '03

Yardbirds with Keith Relf = 2002-2003 Knicks? Yardbirds with Van = 1969 Knicks? |

Rod Stewart, before he became Michael Feinstein, was a fine lead singer for the Jeff Beck Group. Richard Thompson and Steve Winwood were just coming on the scene, although maybe not the right voices for The Yardbirds. Paul Rodgers? How old was he in the mid 60s? After Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck had some decent singers (Bob Tench), but most singers in his bands were musicians first (like Tim Bogert). |

P.S. Didnt Jimmy Page play on a few Them songs? So a Van Morrison on lead vocals with the Yardbirds wasnt out of the realm of possibility. |

Agree about Keith Relf, he definitely kept this group down (he was OK on some of the pop stuff but when they got bluesy, he was out of his element). What a shame about Rod Stewart he went from great to... (as my father used to say, if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all). Comparing the "New" Rod to Michael Feinstein is insulting Michael Feinstein (tho I'm not a fan of either). My brother in law who is a fairly well known jazz musician got a lot of money to play on Rod's new standard album, he said Rod was dreadful and had no understanding or ability in singing whats called, "The great American Songbook". Old Rod, Van or Terry Reid (remember him?), would have been a huge improvement over Relf. |

I've just rediscovered the "New Yardbirds" version of Dazed and Confused. It's not bad but it's amazing to think that a few short months later Robert Plant took it to a whole new level. ---> Brought to you by Sbenois Engineering LLC <- Hey, it also wouldn’t look good coming out of a motel with your wife’s best friend saying you were just planning a surprise birthday party for her husband...- Arturo November '03
