Can anyone recommend a suburb of London that's sorta like here...small, friendly, close to pub trans, fine schools, maybe you don't even need a car there? London is just too expensive to even consider, so I'm researching options. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Anywhere in Surrey or Kent, from what I know. I have an aunt in Kent who lives in the cutest little town within commuting distance to London. Very sweet little place. I also have a colleague in Wallington, Surrey who seems to feel his place is very nice. |

Ah, you seek the holy grail! It's pretty tough to find anything affordable and nice that's close enough for a reasonable commute to London. I have friends in West Ealing, and St Albans, who both knew the whole of London very well in making their choices. It's more important in London than here to consider where you'll be commuting to - London is BIG! - it can take an additional hour to get across town if your chosen train line takes you to the wrong area.

Good point, Phil. The destination is the University of London. I'm clueless, so welcome the suggestions. |

Which college at the University of London? It makes a difference if it is Kings or Queen Mary or Imperial or Birbeck etc...they are pretty spread out in different parts of the city. |

Barnes, Kew or Richmond Upon Thames. Situated on the river and with a villagey feel to it, lots of good shopping, coffee bars and pubs (Maplewood village reminds me of a London village actually!). Richmond also has wide open spaces with the lovely deer park. Schools are well regarded too, plus in Kingston-Upon-Thames which is a little further out. Also check out Twickenham which is next to Richmond. In this area of course there is the Kew Botanical Gardens, Hampton Court Palace, Syon Park (owned by the National Trust) and Osterley Park. The only concern might be aircraft noise as Heathrow is just a few miles further West. You can find out info on all the London suburbs by looking at these sites: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk (see under property listings for 'local London'). http://www.bbc.co.uk/london (general page) http://www.bbc.co.uk/whereyoulive/index.shtml (use the drop-down list for various suburbs of London and surrounding areas). If you will be at for example, Queen Mary College on the Mile End Rd (Hackney) you might want to consider Chingford, Loughton or Epping, all in the Epping Forest area. Yikes - I'm getting homesick now!

I grew up in St Albans (Hertfordshire) and it is a great city with a fast (20 min) train service into London. Harpenden the town next door is smaller perhaps with more of a Maplewood feel. The schools are excellent. Checkout www.vebra.com for Hertfordshire house prices or www.findaproperty.com has info and comments on Surrey/Kent.Greater London areas (as well as house prices) For info Hertfordshire is north of London, Surrey is South West and Kent is South East. |
