OK, I am on the hunt for a new person who does snow removal. The man who did ours all last year was very reliable (Mario Vargas). However, for the first storm this year (2 Saturdays ago) he showed up at our house at 4:30 a.m., then he showed up in the evening, then I got a bill for $130 -- $50 for the first shoveling, and $80 for the second. I am quite peeved about this, especially since I called his house the night before and asked him to call me back so I could tell him he didn't need to come till the snow stopped. He never called. Yes, he is reliable, but he was also trying to squeeze two jobs out of what should have been one. Anyway, can anyone recommend someone else who's reliable and reasonable?

The same thing happened to us. Mario Vargas was reliable last year and we had agreed to $45/clearing. For the big storm two weeks ago he came twice and charged $55 for each time. There was a lot of snow to clear so I had no complaints. Anyway, it might have been difficult to clear had they waited for all of the snow to fall. But then they showed up last week to clear 2-3" of slush and charged $65, which was a sudden jump, plus we never agreed to more than $45. Anyway, I would consider hiring somebody else, but Mario also mows our lawn in the summer (he apparently mowed our lawn for about 10 years before we moved in), and I am concerned that a new person will be less reliable or much higher priced. That is also why I did not complain too much when Mario charged us a flat rate per month of mowing even when rain kept him away one or more of the weeks. We just got the newest bill yesterday and so haven't decided how to react yet. So, is there anybody else that Seidperson and I should talk to? |

I wish I could help out, but I'm all booked up. If I know of anyone I'll forward a note. Good luck and sorry to hear.

Seid - since you basicaly liked his work in the past, and you say he is reliable, would it not make more sense to first discuss your concerns with him before you seek out someone new? |

I tried talking with his daughter (Mario doesn't speak English) but she wasn't very helpful. I may try again, snow removal guys aren't easy to find. |
