is not as easy as it should be! The camera is a Toshiba PDR-M81 and we had no problems with an older Imac and a Dell Laptop, but can't get it to be recognized on the new Emac. We need to get holiday cards out soon! Any suggestions? Apple was no help and we went to the Toshiba website and followed instructions and it still won't work. The camera is less than 2 years old. |

Well, Image Expert is loaded and it just won't find the camera, which is connected to a USB port. I am so confused by OSX, I think Image Expert is actually running on System 9.x. I have Apple Talk off. I don't have Photoshop yet, so I can't try to see if it connects in software like that. We have a printer connected and that runs fine, and we also have a floppy drive that's ok (and that runs from the USB port). |

You may be on the right track, thinking that Image Expert is running in the 9.x compatibility box, or whatever it's called. The maker of that software ought to be able to help. Another thing to try, if you can afford it, is to try another program which ought to see the camera. Maybe there are free or cheap ones. Tom Reingold There is nothing

iPhoto should recognize any camera you plug into your mac....it's freeware, and is osx native. |

We have iPhoto. I tried it yesterday with the camera hooked up. Is there any special extension I need to load for it to work? |

No. iPhoto should start up when you plug the camera in. When it starts, click the import tab at the bottom. |

I have the camera plugged in and I get nothing on the desktop. I took out a floppy drive from this USB port, so it's not that. The camera is on, and it works on our two other computers. |

Try replacing the USB cable that your camera uses. Perhaps you can borrow the one that your floppy drive uses, since you know that cable works. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Not the cable. The cable works on two other computers. Husband even tried uninstalling Image Expert, thinking there might be some kind of conflict, but no. |

Wonder if it could be a USB 1.1 v. USB 2.0 problem? eMacs have 1.1. |

I love watching Mac users realize that Macs need some type of drivers too. I'm going to duck for cover now. |

Well, if that's the case then what do I do Dave? The Emac is newer than the Imac and the Imac works, so I don't know if that theory makes sense (though I have no idea what USB the Imac uses).

iMacs went to fast (2.0) USB in Sept. this year, so that's not the problem. I wonder if you're trying to use the USB port on your keyboard or on the computer itself? |

I've tried both a USB on the computer and one on the keyboard. Nada. |

Your camera doesn't appear on the list of supported cameras, which means Toshiba probably hasn't written a driver for it on OS X (http://www.apple.com/iphoto/compatibility/camera.html). Your solution is to start up classic mode (in system prefs panel) and then use whatever software you were using on the iMac.

I think we already tried that too. I'll tell my husband to try it AGAIN. |
