Does anyone know of anyplace (e.g. hotels) that might have substantially cheaper parking than the long term lot operated by the airport? Mass transit access to our airports is scandalously poor; I wonder what role the parking and taxi industries have in preserving the status quo? It is odd to think that my parking costs may approach that of the flight! |

I don't know of any, but would love to find out if they exist. The parking prices ARE really outrageous. I have taken to paying teens/college students to drive my family to the airport and then taxi home, except for very short (3-4 day or less) trips. |

It's not cheap, but if we can't scrounge rides to and from the airport, we generally use Avistar. They often have coupons available at their website or in the Entertainment book, so it winds up being less expensive than the long term lot. Also, in winter months they'll clean off your car if it snows (and anyone who's come back from a trip to find their car buried under snow and ice knows the value in that!) |

Thanks for the input. I don't really have anyone to bum a ride from, so that is out. Now that NJ Transit has the Secaucus transfer station one can transfer from the Midtown Direct to one of the trains going to EWR (but note the ripoff pricing for getting off at the airport), which is pretty neat. But my return flight gets in after 11 pm on a weekday, so I couldn't count on getting a train back. |

I always just take a cab home from the airport. Not cheap (probably about $30), but less than multi-day parking. It seems that it is getting to the airport that is more problematic (i.e. worrying if the taxi will come.) |

Sorry, but paying $30 for a short cab ride is something not all of us want to do. That is the whole point of my original post....

I just don't think that there are any cheaper, generally available and reasonably convenient options. If I'm wrong, I'd love to know about them. |

Check this site: http://www.longtermparking.com/newjer.htm I like airpark, they are very! fast at getting you to the plane, and picking you up. They have AAA discounts and great car wash to full service detailing. |

I like the service at AviStar--two locations at Newark, good buses, car care, etc. And, one of the owners is Maplewood's own Rick West. Prices are $14.49/day plus tax, but they run all sorts of discounts (which I sign up for on their web site). The price works out to comparable to the airport, with better security, car is cleared of snow for you, and you don't have to walk to your car when you get home. www.avistarparking.com
