Knicks fired Scott "I know talent when I see it" Layden, and replaced him with Isaih "I killed the Knicks with three three pointers, in 90 seconds" Thomas. |

I remembered this post was started awhile back...give Isaiah some credit for shaking things up. Layden "Utahed" the Knicks (thanks to Dave Checketts really) with the exception that he didnt add any Malone/Stockton sorts. Yesterday's trade was interesting..the Knicks will be a better team, possibly a playoff team in the weak East, but will definitely be more fun to watch (the Maplewood Over 35 League is possibly more fun to watch than the Knicks this season). Marbury seems to have matured and he is a consistent scorer and assist person throughout his career. The Knicks got rid of some dead wood but got a big contract in Hardaway who was a premier player and now comes off the bench. Does he have any juice left? Phoenix clears additional cap room by taking Ward, who they will cut, and McDeyess whos contract may be up this year or next. Charlie Ward was with the Knicks for ten years...seems noteworthy in this day and age in sports. |

On the surface this looks like a good step for the Knicks. They add a true point guard who can score 20 points a game to go with Houston and the newly rejuvenated Van Horn who can also score in that range. Longer terms there are probably problems. First they give up two draft choices, one a first rounder. Sooner or later they are going to have to get a center to replace Mutombo, who has been playing major minutes in his old age. Second can Marbury and Van Horn live together? Obviously they have had their problems in the past. Will Van Horn continue his revival or go into his shell. Guys who can score 20 points and pick up 10 boards are few and far between and having to defend three guys who can score 20 on any given night can give opposing defenses the fits. The recent revival of the Knicks has a lot to do with finding the open man. Will Marbury do this or will his ego require that he be the top scorer in every game? Also, does Marbury’s assist game which is of the run and gun variety fit in with the relatively slow footed Knicks? How does his defense rate in comparison to the incumbents? Somehow he doesn’t seem the type. Don’t worry to much about Charlie Ward. While he will be taking a pay cut, he will probably end up with a contending team such as the Spurs or the Nets. Solid backup point guards without baggage are few and far between.

I like the move although with mixed feelings. Losing the two first rounders hurt although the Knicks haven't done anything lately with their draft picks lately. I'm still waiting for Fredrick Weiss to make his entrance. It seems they are mortgaging the future to make the playoffs now and to put a few more fans in the seat. Marbury's numbers are great and him and Houston give the Knicks the best backcourt in the East, however his personality doesn't fit with many teams. Him and Garnett didn't get along. Maybe with the Knicks it will be different because he's been wanting to come here his whole career Van Horn is another one who didn't get along with Marbury in NJ. I think Van Horn will be gone pretty soon. Maybe with his revival the last two weeks the Knicks can get someone decent for him.
