Our family is looking for a property (for purchase or rental) less than an hour and a half's drive from Maplewood/So. Orange for weekend and vacation hiking, swimming, fishing, skiing and general nature immersion. Does anyone have a recommendation for a hopefully picturesque locale with year-round possibilities? Biggest pluses: on or very close to lake or river, some cultural activity (minimally, a bookstore and good coffee hangout) locally. We hear about "New Jersey lake country" but don't know much about its sweet spots. Thank you!

Lake Hopatcong area might meet your needs. Have you considered the Poconos in PA? Likely more rural at much lower price.

I love Sparta. I assume homes are pricey around there though.

Another vote for the Poconos. Lake Naiomi Community specifically in Pocono Pines ... great beach club on the lake, beautiful olympic size pool, lovely location.. near Camelback for winter skiing. Not too far from the outlets too -

If you wanna stretch to two hours, try Phonecia NY. Not as pricey as Woodstock but its 15 minutes away and ya got the bookstore/coffee situation covered.

If you want something on a lake cheap and not to live in all year (But you could)check out Branchville, wantage, West Milford etc.
Personally I like Long Valley, Califon and further.

Try Frenchtown on the Delaware River; an easy 60-70 minute drive from Maplewood. Some decent dining, a coffee place, a few galleries and interesting stores, and spectacular views. Bucks county PA is across the bridge, with many cultural opportunities. Lambertville/New Hope is about 15 minutes south, also with plenty to do. The Delaware National Recreation area is about 30 minutes north, and there is also a state park south of Frenchtown on the river (reachable by a bike/hike trail that runs right through town).

Califon/Long Valley/Tewksbury is beautiful too (I moved from Maplewood to Califon) but other than the South Branch of the Raritan River and the Musconetcong river for fishing, and some smaller streams in the area, not much happening with watersports.

You might consider the New Paltz, NY area. It's about 1 1/2 hours north and is a college town with rock climbing/hiking, Mohonk Preserve. There's got to be lakes up there, too.

Lake Minnewaska is just outside New Paltz. Its beautiful but no power boats allowed if you are into that sort of thing. The Hudson is right there if you want to power boat. I do think its gotten pretty pricey up there though as lots of people have gone there for weekend homes (my parents sold a house of there a few years ago.)

I vote for Minnewaska, it is great and you don't have to pay NJ taxes.
