Yeesh, the banks are greedy! For a new checking account, they want at least $1,000 minimum balance, and they charge you heavily if you fall under. Is there a nearby bank that doesn't have such a high minimum? A bank with a branch around SO/M and one in or near Greenwich Village would be ideal.

I have an old account with Fleet. It has a $100 minimum. I asked, and they said they might raise that to $1,000 at any time. Well, gee, thanks.

Try Independence Bank. There's one on Springfield & Prospect, one on Millburn Ave, a new one on Stuyvesant in Union (very close to here) and they're scattered throughtout NYC. At the new one on Stuyvesant they might be offering some promos, so if you go to the Springfield one ask. Dudley is the Manager and he's very nice.

Excellent. Their web site says they have a no fee and no minimum checking account. It's $25 to open the account, so it's not really fee-free, but that's pretty low compared to $16/month for being under balance.

I tried looking at this over the weekend and their web server was out of commission. Not impressive, but not altogether important, either.

Try Commerce; very customer-friendly, low (maybe even no) minimum balance, free online banking, lots of great services. And their hours are unbeatable: open 7 days a week, and as late as 8 pm on weekdays. The closest local branches we've found are on Morris Avenue -- three on Morris actually, one in Union and two in Springfield, one at the intersection of Morris & Springfield Aves, and the other just before Morris hits Millburn Ave. It's a relatively new bank in this area, but seems to be doing really well -- I notice new branches going up all the time.

Wachovia was running ads for low balance, zero-fee checking over the holidays.

And while I've never taken advantage of it, Commerce has those FREE coin counting machines!
