Help! My 12 year old son is seriously into music (yay!). But he wants to start downloading music from the internet. Can anyone tell me: 1. How is this done? 2. What are the best sites for doing this? 3. Is it legal and/or moral (I do not like the idea of ripping off musicians)? 4. Is it safe for my computer? I do not like the thought of having people have access to my computer, nor me to theirs. 5. Can I do it without buying a MacIntosh or Ipod? Thanks from a technophobic dad (yikes, I am as outmoded as my own father was when I was 12!). |

mfpark, does someone very close to me have something to do with this?. As a musician, I don't like it. It's kind of a grey area as far as the legality (unless you own the site and then your in the line of fire) but I don't think Maplewood's finest will be coming with a warrant for downloading a couple of tunes. I think they should make this perfectly legal as long as you only download, Madonna, Britney Spears, Christine Aguellera, Backstreet Boys etc (You know record execs marketing schemes which have 100% to do with image and 0% to do with music or creativity). As far as answering your question, no clue and my son is torturing me about this also. |

Yes, Uke, I can only partially blame your son for opening this pernicious door for my son. A vacation with his older cousin made it worse. I ain't so worried about the legality, but to me it is like downloading books without buying them. Authors and musicians often get paid little enough as it is. And, like you, no son of mine will be downloading Britney or other made for market bands (I hope).

Thanks Duncan. Of course, no sooner had I posted than I found a great article on just this topic in the NY Times today. http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/01/technology/circuits/01file.html And there is a companion piece with the article on the various services available.

iTunes all the way baby, Mac or Windows it makes no diff. You can download and save as mp3's and move the songs/audio books/spoken word to any mp3 player that you can hook up to your computer, however the only one that will mount in iTunes currently is the iPod. There is some speculation that Apple will release a new, cheaper version of the iPod in a few days, on the 6th. this iPod is rumored to be a pocket sized (like it's not now) version of 2 and 4 gigs in size with a price point around $100. They will also supposedly come in various colors icluding stripes, if this is the case they will most likely begin offering the larger models in colors also. On another note, there have been rumors tha tApple will also unveil its very own DVR (Digital Video Recorder), while it is reported to not have a listing guide as you can get with a Tivo or Replay TV, it is said to come with a version of Apples iDVD, allowing for the recording of and burning to DVD (in the included Superdrive, CD/DVD burner)of captured television broadcasts. It is reported to be wireless capable, that means you can stream the recording to your computer for viewing, or vice versa, if not wireless I sure they would offer the the old fashioned cable method of networking. Of course this could all be rumor, or perhaps still in the works and not quite ready for prime time as of yet. Check out http://www.apple.com/ on Jan. 6th to see if these rumors pan out. |

I think I read that Dell has a site to compete with Apple's. Might be worth looking into. And for a chuckle, check out http://www.whatacrappypresent.com Don't lead your son to illegal downloads. Not only are they a bad idea for ethical reasons, the software wreaks havoc with your computer. Make sure your PC has virus AND spyware protection. Norton (Symantec) and McAfee are good virus protection packages. Buy one or the other. And get something like spysweeper for spyware protection. Tom Reingold There is nothing

I agree with other posters: please guide your son into downloading music LEGALLY. Music is property, although that is a tricky concept for some people. It's great that your son is getting into music! I've found with some of my young relatives that a very interesting conversation can be had, starting with these questions: why do you like this music, and what makes it better than some other music? It can lead a child to begin considering the basic nature of art and information. It's a major accomplishment to convince a child that the best songs aren't the ones that have the loudest bass, or the most curse words in the lyrics. Food for the brain! |

Notehead: So far, his heros are Weird Al and ACDC! Gotta start somewhere, I guess. We have had a great time discussing and listening to the originals that Weird Al disses, he understands that ACDC is musically challenged, and last week he wandered into Tom Petty land. It is loads of fun, and I know the downloading will lead to even more sharing. And the best part--he has two younger brothers! Tom: That is the point, thanks. I neither want the computer viruses nor the moral terpitude (nor the bad copies). I scan my computers periodically with McAfee--thanks for reminding me it is time again. |

Unfortuately, yes, spyware is different from viruses. Anti-virus software doesn't keep spyware off your PC. Spyware and viruses are now lumped together as "malware". I don't think there are all-purpose anti-malware packages yet, but I'm sure there will be. We use spysweeper at work. It was very scary to run it for the first time and learn how much stuff had crept into our PC's. I'm sure you'll find the same thing, even before you start downloading music. For spyware and tracking files and all that nastyness - go to www.download.com and download Adaware. It's kickass. Most programs that you don't have to pay for are illegal. Kazaa, etc. I agree with Uke about the crappy "music". Some musicians offer free mp3s on their websites or places like mp3.com, or cdbaby.com - to get their names out there, and to get people interested. |
