We're new to town and haven't yet found a babysitter but are dying for a nice dinner out...our son (9 months) is pretty well behaved if we time it right (like around 5:30!) I've heard Celebrated foods is great but am not sure it's the kind of place to bring a kid...any suggestions much appreciated!

I think Celebrated Foods is fine for a 5:30 dinner with a baby. Cent Anni's too, but I like Celebrated better.

Agreed! St. James Gate is fine at that hour...so for that matter is Verjus!

JJ's Chinese on Millburn Ave is family friendly, too. With leather booths and a Koi tank, noisy children are never an issue.

Cafe Arugula would also work.
Bunny's or Village Trattoria are also fine if you want to be more casual.

AVOID the Gaslight Brewery...as I'm sure you've seen on many other threads here.

Thanks to you all...this will keep us busy for a while! Now all we need to do is make sure Mr. Baby behaves. What's Pal's Cabin like, BTW? I'm imagining some cozy place out in the woods although I'm not sure such a thing can be found around here...

Celebrated at 5:30 is fine with kids. There are lot of places, it really depends on what type of food you like and how nice of a meal you want. 9 mos is a great age, because you can keep the kid pretty contained, and hopefully he's not a picky eater yet and you can feed him from your plate. It's so beautiful out, you might even want to walk around a bit, in which case I'd recommend going to downtown Maplewood, Millburn or Montclair so you can stroll after eating. (South Orange too.)

Good idea, shh--sounds nice! Hopefully the weather will hold. This is a great age--it's fun because he gets a big thrill out of being in the high chair, and he loves checking out new people too. We just have to make sure he doesn't grab anything hot off the table (or out of the waiter/waitress' hands!)

Pal's is like Charlie Browns with good food. The inside is cabin-like. Big cabin. Best burgers/steaks in NJ. Their mushroom soup is pretty good, too.

... and Pals Cabin is located at a very busy intersection, hardly the rustic surroundings you imagined.

I heartily second JJ's Chinese restaurant as a family destination. They love kids of all ages and the food is quite decent and reasonably priced.

Last night we also tried out Jambalaya (sp?) on Stuyvesant Ave in Union (take Boyden Ave down to the Dunkin Donuts and turn right. It'll be on your right. At night the roof has lit sign reading EAT.) Excellent smoky ribs and a very decent sirloin, both char-grilled. They specialize in Portuguese, Cajun and Mexican. We sampled from the Portuguese char-grill portion of the menu and are looking forward to eating our leftovers later today. Attention fellow carnivores, this is a good place to get your fix. There were lots of kids (including a birthday party). The kids menu had nothing over $5, including a 3 rib selection. At five bucks a pop it would be a bargain for birthday parties, with real food and real choices. (Parents, meanwhile, can guzzle their favorite libations and take comfort knowing someone else will handle cleanup!) We were there from about 6 to 7 p.m. and it was not crowded. My guess is the joint starts jumpin later. We look forward to seeing the Nightmares or Big Train there sometime.

When our duaghter was about that age, we stumbled upon Lulu's Bistro (across from the big Shop Rite in Livingston). The food, service & atmosphere were excellent and they couldn't have been friendlier to our child.

We went there again last night without child(although much later in the evening) and found the meal, service & atmosphere again to be excellent.

The Star Ledger gave it rave reviews, as well. http://nj.com/dining/reviews_ledger.ssf?13995?13995

Check it out.

If you like Mexican, go to either Tinga in Millburn, or Toro Loco in South Orange, they are both very kid friendly.
If you like Sushi, Sono in Millburn and Monster Sushi in Summit are very good with kids.

Passed by Sono the other day. Looked like it went out of business.
