I am still looking for someone to remodel my basement. The two people that my wife called recently never returned our message. I am accepting the names and numbers of any and all good contractors.

Millie - no offense, but maybe your advertisments for you husband would be better in the classifieds or you can PL people? Sometimes, checking back for advice or response to a question and finding an ad is frustrating. It also unneccesarily lengthens the threads.

BTW- I think it's great that you help him out spreading the word. It's nice when your spouse is your biggest fan!

Sorry, Greenetree, but I don't really see how Millie is in the wrong here: HGB requested names and numbers of contractors, and Millie recommended her husband. Sure sounds germaine to me. Now, if she were to post her hubby's contact information in a thread about George W. Bush or Yumsters, I'd see your point . . .

HGB- have you tried Justin at The Contractors?

Amanda- just my opinion. I noticed that whenever anyone asks for recommendations & experience, Millie posts that her husband can do it. I was under the impression that people come to this thread because they want unbiased opinions & personal experience from other home owners. I didn't say she was "wrong", just that this may not be the type of info everyone is looking for on this particular thread.

Just my opinion & no further comment, since this isn't the Soapbox.

I can live with Millie. At least you know where she is coming from. Her approach is better than contractors who might sign on under a false name and tout themselves. I think this has happened in the past.

I do not mind this kind of posting because Millie is stating that her husband is available to do the job. How many times have you tried to call a contractor only never to get a call back? I would rather have a proactive "Hey, I can do this and I'm available" message than to call 10 contractors.

Now that Millie has stated his availability, it is up to the homeowner to check on Bruno's references. Maybe others here can vouch for Bruno's workmanship.

On my site, www.millburnweb.com, people do this all the time on the Babysitting section. I do not mind as long as it's not bothersome and repetitive (like the woman who advertises her computer skills almost every day on the classifieds here.)

Just curious... how come nobody mentions the sponsors on MaplewoodOnline.

One of the banners that keep popping up is from Xcel Renovations (disclaimer - xcel has a banner ad on millburnweb.com too). It might figure that locals who advertise on local websites like MOL might hold themselves up to a higher degree of scrutiny (since their ads are "in your face"), and therefore, would be conscious of providing a high degree of quality. Or, am I just deluding myself.

Marc-

There was a local advertiser a couple years ago who even asked some of us to participate in a survey. Then, he disappeared. I think that there were a couple people who did not have the best experience with him, but I can't be sure.

I still think that the reason most people come here is to get recommendations from other "real people" who have had similar work done. Perhaps once an online advertiser is able to get a customer or two to post nice things about them, they'll crack the barrier.

In my case, I not only look for personal experience, but also at who posted the recommendation. I tend to trust the opinions of people who have been around longer. Based on other types of postings, I also know whose judgement I might trust more (I'm not talking about Soapbox postings, BTW).

For example, if anyone has called Millie's husband, or any of the advertisers, and has an impression to share, that would be nice. Heck, it would even be good to know if they returned phone calls or how someone felt about the estimate!
