I'm sure there is a simple answer to this, but the list of tax delinquents in the Dec.24 issue of the News-Record was a bit shocking. Most of the listings seem to be for small amounts -- indeed most of them seem to consist of that danged sewer fee -- but still there are quite a few who owe many thousands of dollars. I suppose this is an annual ritual to get people to pay up, but by the looks of this list, our local government, county, and schools must be losing millions each year from failure to pay. Could it really be that we could raise $1 million more for our schools simply by better collections? If so, maybe we should look into some hardball tactics at this point -- with apologies to those who really are in a bad bind because of the tough economy under the latest Republican deficit-driven recession.

Where should we take a stand, in that case? Non-payers piss us off, but I bet most of them would claim hardship of the sort you're talking about.

Actually, I was struck by how few large numbers there were. I don't have the list anymore, but I think there were fewer than 10 with 10K or more owed, and two of those lots were Universal Chain, with an enormous sum (several hundred K I think).

Yeah, it bothers me too, but I'd only consider it an unusual problem if I knew how it compared to delinquency rates were in surrounding communities.

The Town sells leins on most of the properties to private investment companies and collects the money that way. The investors collect interest and principal eventually, or foreclose.

I don't think this costs the Town a substantial amount of money, although at the last TC meeting the CFO indicated some liens were not sold.

The Sewer fee!!!!

I will be posting on the Joint Meeting soon.

Copihue asked a couple of days ago, what is the Joint Committee?

To Which Dave Huemor has been appointed, by freddy and crew. We will have more on this very soon.

But why appoint a well to do Investment Banker to a plum job which requires good judgement? This appointment Copihue is a plum because it actually pays real money to the appointee.

The reason will be come clearer in a forth coming post.

BTW, the interest rate starts at 18% and is bid down... A great investment if anyone is interested.

Universal Chain owes approximately $750,000. How does the town let it get to this point?

I believe that Universal Chain is in bankrupcy, making it impossible to collect and probably to sell the lien. The CFO mentioned some sproperty liens couldn't be sold.

Foreclosure anyone? This is a minefield since this property is alleged to be polluted. A year or so ago the TC mentioned a developer was interested in constructing an apartment complex.

I used to wonder about those listings too. However, this year we learned that it isn't necessarily the property-owner's fault. We refinanced late in the summer, and somehow the bank managed to 'overlook' that there was a fall tax payment due. (Strange, since they collected plenty of escrows from us!) The tax office warned us that we might wind up in the paper, but in the end it did get sorted out.

Universal Chain is a very cool building. It would be great location for a music video or movie. I want the brushed aluminum letters from the signage.

Reflective,

No, I haven't seen it yet, should I?

FWIW, I was up late to check out Universal Chain to see if the ground was glowing... BTW, when all is said and done, that property will go for a song... Do you think anyone can name that tune?

Am I supposed to know where Universal Chain is located? Oots, do you really believe that cost is the most important factor in locating a police building? What about the traffic patterns? what if it's next to your house? what if the building is not in a main through street which allows police officers to get to where they have to go quickly?

Pack your own chute.

Universal Chain is on Burnett between DeHart Park and the Verizon Building. It is set back from the street so it is easy to miss if you don't know the area and aren't looking for it. There are very few private residences on that side of the street and the nearest has been converted into a church within the last year or so.

Rachael, I agree it is a cool looking building. However, it probably has to be demolished if a police station is built there, unlikely in my opinion. And sorry about the letters, I swiped them last night. :-)
