Thank you to everyone for all the great suggestions! It's nice to know that so many places deliver, too. By the way, are there any really good Mexican restaurants around here (eat-in, take out, whatever)?

I like the Mexican-style seafood entrees at Carmelitas, probably best eaten "in." Carlos really does nice things with fish and shrimp.

I also think the food at Tinga Taqueria in Millburn is very tasty, much better than Toro Loco.

Mojave Grill in Westfield has some interesting Mexican fare - pricey, though.

I guess I'll ask here. Are there any local churrascarias (brazilian steakhouse) around here besides in Newark?

kevin... there's a brazilian-bbq in union on vaux hall just past the burnet avenue intersection. i don't know what it's called, don't know if it's good but i've driven by a couple of times at night and the place is completely lit up.

I believe you're referring to Burnett Barbecue (soon to be located on Springfield Ave?)

We like Toro Loco in So. Orange a lot. I don't think Mexican food in general is very good for take-out though.

SoOrLady... not sure if you were referring to my post... but the brazilian-bbq place i'm speaking of is past the burnet intersection where Burnett's bbq is located... i think it might be called: Casa del Sol? i know it's casa something...

hope that helps a little.

Jumbalaya is a Portuguese-Mexican barbeque place on Stuyvesant between Boyden & Stanley, across from Hollywood Cemetery. It has terrific char-grilled and I think marinated ribs & chicken & steak, very tender and tasty. They also have garlic chicken, paella, other Portuguese-Brazilian dishes. Prices are very reasonable. They have take-out too.

Anyone know where you can get Peruvian chicken around here? Or Cuban-Chinese, a la Flor de Mayo, on Manhattan's Upper West Side?

We ordered take-out from Hunan Wok (the new place on Springfield Ave.) for the first time last night, and we were pleasantly surprised by the tastiness of the food. I'm not saying it's the best Chinese food I've ever had, but it's a nice addition to local take-out options.

One of the dishes we ordered, Dragon Meets Phoenix, was especially good. They'll fax you a menu and deliver, so you don't even have to leave your nice warm house. The number is 973-313-2700.

ril: I have yet to find a cuban-chinese place anywhere near here that is nearly as good as any of several places on the West Side. Would love to hear if there is one.

mrosner, I wouldn't hold my breath. Haven't the Cuban Chinese places nearly disappeared from the west side?

I'll never forget the tri-lingual waiters who greeted me with, "Hi! Como esta?!" and ate with forks and drank espresso and served Chinese food with rice and beans.

There are still a bunch of Cuban Chinese places in the city. Nueva Victoria is still running strong on West 95 (or 93?) and B'way.

We practically lived at La Caridad on about 79th and Bway up until when we moved last year. There's something about an older chinese man serving you rice and beans...

There are a couple of Peruvian places in Elizabeth on the Union border, otherwise known as the Elmora section. If you take Morris Ave east and turn right immediately past Kean University you get onto North Ave which soon becomes Elmora Ave. There's a stretch several blocks long that had at least 2 Peruvian places the last time I was there < a year ago. Best Cuban places I've seen in NJ were in Hoboken, not the downtown section but back near Spring St. I don't know if La Concha is still there but my mouth waters just typing this. But there are probably some good Cuban restaurants (maybe including that great Cuban/Chinese combo) in Elizabeth as well. Closer to downtown I'd guess.

Are you thinking of "Costa del Sol" in Union? I've not eaten there in a while, but it used to be an upscale Portugese restaurant, with dancing on weekends. I think they had private facilities available for parties/receptions. The food was very good, but it has been at least 10 years since I've eaten there (the kids didn't like Portugese food, unfortunately).

Jay's is OK and the delivery is good, but don't make the mistake we did and ask for the burger medium-rare - it comes almost uncooked! The shakes are great too.

We like Morris Thai in Union for takeout - a little far but worth it.

Samurai Sushi is decent and they deliver!

Village Trattoria is great for Italian take-out, but their pizza is not the best of the choices in town.

The Maple Leaf is just fine for diner food!

We like Tinga better than Carmelitas, and they deliver.

Actually, we always ask for our Jay's burgers medium rare, and they've always come perfectly medium rare, which is hard to do. Only once did they come a bit more on the medium side, but it was a fluke.

Misty's Deli (next to the Rock Bottom Bar & Grille) at 435 Main Street in West Orange is a low-cost, newly opened (a year) Peruvian restaurant. Nellie is a sweet owner. Check it out then go next door for a cocktail and music at the Rock Bottom!
