Having had one nice dinner at Papillon (with our 4 year old), we headed there to have a child free dinner Sunday night. When we arrived the women at the door politely informed us that they have a policy against athletic shoes, and could not seat us in restaurant or bar. (I'll note that my husband was in business casual Dockers and a long sleeved button-down shirt, but neglected to change into his office shoes from his best athletic shoes). We told them no, we were not interested in going home (in the rain) and interrupting the babysitting in order to get my husband different shoes!

The place was only about 25% full, so I'm sure that they cost themselves money. They are welcome to have whatever dress code they want; however, I'm quite surprised -- I don't think we've been bumped for dress code in nearly 20 years of dining together! In particular, I'm amused to be rejected by a place whose waiter had to go to the bar to get advice on how to open our wine bottle last time. If Papillon wants to be snooty, they need to get their staff up to speed.

Their loss...we went over to Livingston, and tried the Strip House for the first time. Dining room at least as upscale as Papillon, but no comment on our footwear! Wonderful steak and sides (got there just in time to get the Sunday before 7:15 deal -- the NY Strip for $20 instead of $33 or so). Well trained mature service staff. Valet parking to keep us out of the rain. A classy night out overall.

I suppose we'll try Papillon again, since it is the sort of restaurant that we want to see succeed in South Orange. However, we may not get there as often as we would if they were a bit more down to earth -- especially on nasty rainy nights when you might not want to take the good shoes outside.
