I really like London, too. And living in Beijing for a year was a blast. Apart from big cities, my favorite international place would be Dali, China. It's on the Tibetan plateau and is close to the Burmese border. Big French/Vietnamese influence in the cuisine. (Imagine being able to order crepes, sweet and sour chicken -- chicken fresh as you can get -- and a great cup of coffee from the same restaurant for about $3. I even translated part of the menu into English at the La La Cafe, so go there. ) Mem, get to the Temple of the Golden Pavillion (Kinkankuji) in Kyoto. |

PHIL My husband and I had a great few days in Bath just wandering around. We took a boat ride down some canal, took a long walk up into a neighborhood, saw the old Bath, visited a bunch of pubs, came across a car show. This was about 6 or 7 years ago but I recall a great time. |

It would take a good bit of research for me to list all my favorite cities outside of the US, and many are on the list already here. But how about small towns, little magical places you've found while wandering, tucked in among mountains or ignored because of more prominent places nearby? And how many on this list have been on all 7 continents? I have one to go--Antarctica. I'm still looking for an affordable trip there. Next month will be my first visit to Morocco. I'm going to put together a list of little towns. |

Should we start a favorite little town thread? But, after reading all these posts by such well traveled persons - I feel that my travel horizons should be broadened - that said, Ennis, Ireland is my choice for favorite little town. |

Little towns - oh this could go on... Paraty - Brazil (untouched artsy-Colonial Spanish town on a bay with hundreds of islands to visit via your own boat each day - who needs Greece! Yep - you can get a private 30' schooner to yourself for the day for $60) http://www.paraty.com.br/iindex.asp Eze, France (near Niece, small town built into a mountain, nice memories from my first trip abroad) Kinsale, Ireland (yes, Ireland does have gourmands!) http://www.kinsale.ie/ Stuben, Arlberg, Austria (great skiing, quaint authentic town - less of a tourist crowd than the other towns of the Arlberg - and cheaper!) http://www.stuben.com/english/index.html San Gimignano (yeah - I know it's tourist Tuscany at it's best, but the towers are gorgeous...) oooohhhhhh - i wanna go on a trip! |

I've been to Eze, too, JG. What a wonderful place, especially if you walk up the mountain instead of taking public transport. About halfway up the mountain there is a little handmade sign that says "drinks" with a left-pointing arrow. If you follow the arrow, you wind up in a beautiful little grotto where a woman lives with her two adorably feral little babies in a small stone house. She sells beverages out of her living room window (non-alcoholic, but you will be thirsty after climbing the mountain) which you can sit and drink in her shaded stone courtyard. A perfect break, about 2/3 of the way up the mountain. I have a Carpe Diem ring from my trip to Eze; one of the local artist creates these rings that are inscribed with the words "carpe diem" and they also have a tiny sort of sundial thing built in, with numbers lining the inside of the ring and a small hole in the silver. When you hold the ring up to the sun, it shines through the hole and illuminates the hour of the day via the corresponding numbers engraved inside. Amazing. |

That is AMAZING! So all: I've wondered which part about travel is the better part - the planning, the experience itself, or the memories? I still not sure, but the lingering memories may be the best part!?!?

Just got back from Victoria, BC and it is a beautiful city. Get this...they STOP for pedestrians in the crosswalks. Things like that make a place special for me. If I were to visit here from another city, I would not think so highly of our little town for that reason alone. |
