The "Opening Statement" that the Mayor gives to explain the meeting agenda is a big improvement. It is also nice to see that he is, quite often, looking directly at the camera while speaking. This clearly gives the meetings a warmer feel for viewers at home.

Will they be providing the agenda online at the Town's website? That would also help people know what was going to be discussed. |

Some observations from the meeting: 1. It would help if Mr. Pettis would remember to move the microphone back in front of him when speaking. The other four seem to have mastered this. 2. I was surprised to see that running mates Ken and Kathy not voting along the same lines. Although from what I observed, Kathy consistently voted in line with Mayor Profetta. I did tune in late and I may have missed something, so please correct me if I am off base here. 3. Finally, and I posted this in the official Maplewood section, how did Fred Profetta become Mayor of Maplewood. Did I miss an election? I didn't notice this on the November ballot. Do the citizens of Maplewood get to elect their Mayor? How does one become Mayor of Maplewood? I would be interested in knowing. TheVillagePub |

We do not elect a mayor. Somehow a mayor is chosen among the committee members. The only powers that the Mayor has (at least during a meeting) is running the meeting and casting the deciding vote in the case of a tie. Tom, you can know anything you want. All meetings are open to the public. They are held on a regular schedule which you can get on the Maplewood Township site. |

Fred "I will never run as a Democrat" Profeta became mayor of Maplewood when he petitioned to run as a Democrat and won a seat in 2002. The mayor is not an elected position, it's voted by the township committee. (Makes me wonder whether he'd run on the Green Party ticket if he ever loses his seat.) |

The mayor also gets some press when she or he endorses a candidate for county or state office. |

Bets - The mayor is elected by the other township committeepersons. Enough with the sour grapes already, it's getting really old. VillagePub, the citizens elect the township Committeepeople who vote for mayor among the five of them. This year, Fred Profeta was elected as mayor by Huemer. Pettis, Leventhal, and Grodman and hiis own vote. Last Year, Vic DeLuca was elected by Grodman, Ryan, Huemer, Profeta and his own vote. Tom, I think the meeting agendas are in the leaflet, or you can go to the municipal building and pick up schedules and agendas. |

In the past the TC posted agendas prior to the meeting, first here on MOL and then on the Town website that is available at this link;http://www.twp.maplewood.nj.us/ Mr. Ryan was usually the member who posted the agenda and I note that no agenda has been posted for the last two meetings. I hope that the policy of posting agendas will be continued in the future. I second the idea of posting the minutes of the meetings on the Town site. Sitting through several hours of meeting with poor video and sound is somewhat trying, especially if the Knicks or Nets are playing that night. |

"I will be voting against the two incumbents running in May 2005: Stephen Steglitz and Mary Theroux." -- Bets, in her latest off-topic post in the South Orange Specific area Bets, you insist on again butting shrilly in, this time on a thread for a town you don't even live in! Why do you constantly confuse sideline sniping with actual political commentary? Your comments here are as worthless as they are in South Orange. Happy New Year. --Soda |

Seems more like he's attempting the Thinking Man's pose with mixed results while Kathy and Ian are using the more traditional head-propping maneuver in an effort to appear interested. Kudos to Fred and Ken for not using a hands on head pose. |
