You knew the time would come when Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction would be found, and the Democrats and their liberal pals in the media would have to admit George W. Bush and Tony Blair were justified in invading Iraq and overthrowing Saddam Hussein. Well, set the table and get the crow ready, because according to intelligence sources cited by an exiled opposition party, Syria is hiding Iraq's WMD in 3 locations. They say they were smuggled in wooden crates and are being hidden by a relative of Syrian President Bashar Assad. But wait! America's enemies abroad and the Democratic Party at home have been dedicating so much time to slamming Bush for his actions in Iraq .. is the resolve there to do anything at all even if we do find out that Assad's cronies are hiding Saddam's weapons? Our Euro-weenie "friends" want to see America weakened. They have these visions of the European Union being the dominant political and economic world power. This only happens if America is weakened. It if takes Islamic Jihadists to do the deed, no problem. And our Democrats? They have placed their hatred of George Bush and their desire for a return to power ahead of the security interests of their country. They'll gladly suffer the short-term losses to terrorism if it means a return to power inside the Beltway. That's what this election is about .. our security. Budget deficits, spending, Social Security reform, evil corporations, welfare brood mares ... important? Yes. But not nearly as important as an ultimate victory over Islamic terrorism and the destruction of those who aid, harbor, and support the terrorists. If our intelligence forces confirm that Syria is hiding some of Saddam's weapons then the reaction should be swift, certain and devastating. If Bashar Assad gets the idea that his cover has been blown there is the chance that he will move quickly to divest himself of these weapons ... and he could chose to do so by handing them over to groups or individuals who are anxious to see them used against the infidels.

"intelligence sources cited by an exiled opposition party" Not exactly the gold standard in reliability. Now why would Syria want to hide Iraq's dirty laundry? Anyway, the capture of Hussein notwithstanding, Iraq continues to be a work-in-progress. It seems that we pretty desperately need to stablize Iraq and get our troops home. Already, it can be seen that the Armed Forces are having trouble attracting and retaining personnel. The all-volunteer Armed Forces doesn't work to well when you have a truly unpleasant mission such as occupation duty to perform. |

And if no weapons are found, we'll charge him with adultery, right? It would be hard to imagine a more stupid move than attacking Syria on the basis of intelligence reports, given the track record of U.S. intelligence efforts to date. |

I didn't think this was a war against Islam, but a war against Terrorism. Why label it as Islamic Terrorism, this just feeds the spin on the War against Islam. The war is on Terrorism...period. TheVillagePub |

Tom, Do I detect some form of sarcasm in your response? Tom, I guess I do not "Got It". In terms of attempting to define "them", that was not my intent. In fact, I believe I tried to move away from defining who the terrorists are. In terms of your comment, "It's just a war of us against them." Your isolationist view clearly is incorrect, unless I misunderstand who you believe makes up "us". The recent airline assistance from the British and French governments clearly indicates that Terrorism is being dealt with in a broader context than just the USA. TheVillagePub

Sigh, it was utter sarcasm, intended to depict the notion that the administration seems to want to engender in us. Fear sells, and the simpler fears sell better. They are selling us a picture of the world where you're either good or bad, and the good guys are on our side and the bad guys are everyone else. Think back to 1984. It would be a good book to read today. In the early 80's, when Iran was fighting Iraq, we knew we were against Iran because they held American hostages. The enemy's enemy must be our friend, so we were friends with Iraq. A lot of good that viewpoint did us. In 1984, there were only three powers. "We" were always with one and against the other. But which ones would change from time to time, and the government would deny that the alliances ever changed. Tom Reingold There is nothing

Donny, the only thing I know for sure is that whatever you are smoking didn't come from Maplewood Stationery. Even the administration has given up on the WMD approach. |

We've heard news reports before that WMD were discovered. Remember the one about the huge underground nuke lab? I'll wait until I see some real evidence. |

We don't have to really attack Syria in a serious way. How about lobbing some cruise missiles in there like we did in Baghdad in 1998....based on intelligence. |

I don't think the result would be the same as in 1998, since the context is quite different, with a war going on right next door. http://www.atlapedia.com/online/maps/political/Saudi_etc.htm

Syrian leader makes landmark Turkey trip Ankara |Reuters | 07-01-2004 Print friendly format | Email to Friend President Bashar Al Assad began the first official visit by a Syrian head of state to Turkey yesterday, hoping to nurture a new warmth between neighbours that were close to war only five years ago. Relations have been frosty for decades, chilled by rows over territory and shared water resources. The visit aims to fan the spark of cooperation kindled last November when Syria handed over 22 people suspected of involvement in a wave of deadly suicide bombings in Istanbul. "My visit coincides with a period when Syrian-Turkish relations are reaching a peak. But if we consider the region as a whole, our region is going through a bad period," Bashar told a joint news conference with Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. Sezer echoed the Syrian leader's broader concern.
