We are looking for dining room furniture that DOES NOT have "The Sopranos" written all over it. We went to that Wesco Dining Room Furniture place on Rt. 10 and Huffman Koos and didn't find anything we liked. We're not looking for ultra formal. Any recommendations?

I don't have a real answer, but I like the way you phrased that.

I tend to go with a more eclectic look myself. You can start by looking at Pottery Barn or Crate & Barrel for inspiration. Or look through some decorating magazines for different styles. Decent tables can be found relatively inexpensively (under $1000). I got a solid maple table with 3 leaves for about $800 or so (about 6 years ago) from Berkshire on Route 22. They do the whole North Carolina discount thing. You can buy chairs to match or coordinate. I, of course, am still contemplating the style of chairs I prefer. You don't have to buy a set if you don't want.

Pottery Barn? Crate and Barrell? I am not much into dining "sets" -- we just have a simple PB table/chairs and a sideboard from Richard Roberts.

Richard Roberts. I got my set from him and it's very nice. He will sit with you to discuss what you're looking for, and work with your budget. He's also a very nice guy.

We got a great table at Crate and Barrel last year. Table was 700$, then we got the buffet and 8 chairs for around 3500$. It's all also very child friendly! Delivery was also very quick - that same week!

Ethan Allen isn't cheap but has nice "non-Sopranos" styles. We got our Stickley shaker type table and chairs at Valley Furniture in Watchung, they can get the entire Stickley line of Shaker or Mission style.

Ethan Allen....look for their sales. You can also find good pre-owned stuff. There is place in West Orange, across from the Edison estate that we found some great stuff.

We also have some Crate & Barrel, their quality is not as good as EA, in my opinion.

A friend got a pottery barn pedestal table for 1K and she hates it. Very poorly made and scratches easily. There is a guy in Va who makes tables. His name is tom von fange and his work is incredible. We had him make a side board for us and it is beautiful. He is a real craftsman. He also has Amish make chairs for him. We bought six (I think around 250 each). They are cherry french style ladderback. They are solid and will last many lifetimes. www.antiquetables.com good luck and remember, penny wise and pound foolish!

I got my dining room table and chairs at a store in NYC that sells antique and new furniture. It's aged and has plenty of dents and marks, but it's solid and has style.

The store is "Hip and Humble Home" on W. 19th Street bet. 6th and 7th Av.,
ph # is (212)675-1527

I agree with Pontoise that you get what you pay for, also a good idea to consider your lifestyle and how much you plan to use your dining room. We eat in our dining room every night, pay bills, play cards, do homework, etc.. The inevitable new scratches blend in with the old, I oil it once a month and it's good to go. if I had a formal high-gloss table I would be pulling my hair out with every scratch or watermark - going old and distressed was the best furniture investment we ever made.

Oh! Another good place to go is the auction in WO on Scotland Rd - what's it called again? Someone else can chime in here!

P.S. The Sopranos get their furniture from Maurice Vellency (sp?).

"Hip and Humble Home" has a website here, http://www.hipandhumblehome.com/

I've been using an old cedar picnic table for the last 10 years, it's been on it's last legs however and I've been thinking of buying some salvaged wood, perhaps from an old barn (probably have to go out of state or something) and making my own table.

We bought a rather cool, oval table from Ikea that is not at all the rickety thing you might expect. The big plus is that it can pull out to allow for additional length/seating. It's made of some sort of hard-ish wood but with a wipable surface. Bought the chairs separately, with removable seat/back covers. Looks kinda modern, and we live on it; you can dress it up and dress it down.

I think I recall the table being $600-ish, and the chairs less than $100 apiece.

After looking at all the places mentioned above, we finally found a fairly simple, but elegant looking, table and 8 chairs at Macy's a couple of years back. Bloomie's sometimes has great sales. Wesco was just too expensive; PB and Crate & Barrel too casual. We also didn't buy any other pieces, because we prefer to mix things up a bit. We did choose a wood stain that blends in with just about everything (especially the old stuff from relatives).

What I would do now is go to several places, get the manufacturer info for the piece I like, and see if I can buy it online or from a wholesaler. Same stuff, less money.

One note about Wesco.... when we were looking for a dining room table/chairs we went there and also did not like what we first saw. Maybe its now gone (this was 4 years ago) but in the back we found a few beautiful simple wood pieces and ended up buying a set that we love. Much better quality than Pottery Barn. The set wasn't cheap, but it also wasn't outrageous. So anyone going to Wesco for shaker-type stuff should make their way through the lacquer and baroque stuff to see if there are some treasures in the back.
