The Wife & I are starting to plan a 1-week trip to Nova Scotia for this coming June or July. I'd welcome all suggestions & reminiscences on where to go, what so see, where to stay, restaurants, options re: fly/drive/cruise, etc...

Thanks in advance.

Nova Scotia is BEAUTIFUL. Halifax is nothing special, but there are some wonderful little towns along the coast. We stayed in Mahone Bay (although I can't remember the name of our B&B), but Luneburg is equally nice. We spent four days at an incredible place called Trout Point Lodge (www.troutpoint.com). It is an all inclusive inn w/ a cooking school (optional). The food is amazing, location private and peaceful, hosts are wonderful, rooms gorgeous. My husband and I are dying to go back!

We've been twice in the last couple of years. We boarded the Scotia Prince in Portland, Maine: www.scotiaprince.com. Check out their web site packages - very helpful and make sure to visit Rudder's Seafood Restaurant & Brew Pub right there in town.

I don't want to discourage you but we went to Nova Scotia once and it was the worst vacation of our lives. The place is pretty and there are some very nice B & Bs, etc. But it never stopped raining. They call it New Scotland for a reason. (I've blotted the details from my mind so I can't remember what month we went, but it was summerish so late spring or summer)

I disagree about Halifax. It has a kind of homey appeal. Cute pubs. I hold it dear because it's the only place in the world a guy came on to me by offering me a cup of tea! Friends of mine run the Fresh Start B&B.
The coastal drive around Cape Breton Island is lovely.
The ocean is frigid, as you can imagine.

Actually the ocean along the south coast, west of Halifax is relatively warm because the gulf stream passes nearby. I believe it is considerably warmer than the coast Maine, which is cut off from the stream by the Gulf of Maine. I was there in September and the weather was beautiful.

My ex-wife and I bicycled Nova Scotia for our anniversary many years ago. The memories outlasted the marriage, but good memories they are!

Check out the Bay of Fundy tides. Also, around July 18th thousands of sandpipers land at the Bay's mudflats to fatten for their flight south. Don't expect much nightlife, even in Halifax, but the land is gorgeous, the seafood quite good, and the people very friendly. Brier Island whale cruises put you in deep water relatively quickly. Some good sea kayaking, also, I hear.

Have a great trip.

We enjoyed out late August visit to Nova Scotia very much. The Cabot trail is worth the trip! Stayed at a couple of beautiful lodges which are run by the Canadian gov. Liscomb Mills Lodge, the Silver Dart Lodge. The Westin Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax is first rate. If we ever go again,a definite spot would be The Keltic Lodge which we just had lunch at - incredible location!
As far as weather problems go, we had beautiful weather there and 7 days of rain in sunny Rome!

If you are only taking a 1 week vacation you might want some place closer. Even if you are taking the ferry from (jeez-I forgot the name!) it will take abot 12 hours to drive each way.

With that said, Nova Scotia is well worth the trip.

With only one week, we took a direct flight from Newark to Halifax - around 2 hours as I recall. A few years ago we took the ferry from I think Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, NS. Only time the spouse has been seasick! Rough stretch of water .

Thanks to all for the helpful insights and suggestions. I've started Googling, and I'm getting mighty enthused about this trip. We'll probably fly to either Maine or directly to Halifax, then drive around from there. We'll certainly wanna see the big tides at Fundy, try a dip in the warmer ocean waters to the West, do the Cabot Trail and all of Cape Breton, maybe even get to P.E.I., and eat seafood till we both sprout gills.

Anybody else have some ideas?

Make sure you bring along a little Jean Shepard, so you sleep better, pal.
