I'm new to the area and need to get either cable or satellite hooked up. I'm shocked to see how much ComCast charges per month!! We also need to get high speed internet set up (either DSL or cable modem). What has your experiences been with various companies, and what have you found to be the best value for digital cable with premium channels and internet service? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We use Comcast and would consider "The dish". Don't get me wrong, Comcast has been ok but do charge alot. We also have comcast DSL. This has been good.

Comcast does give you a discount for internet service if you are a cable customer. Their internet service (after some initial glitches when they took over for @Home) is now quite reliable, and since the end of last year, is much faster than DSL. I'm getting download speeds of up to 3MB.
So unless you're getting a major cost savings with satellite, you may be better off with Comcast for TV and internet.

I asked this same question when I moved here ... and did a bunch of research as well. There are many other threads about this here on MOL.

Try: /discus/messages/3131/20391.html

/discus/messages/129/14159.html

/discus/messages/3135/23272.html

... just a few.

Also try this board's search feature -- upper right part of this screen. If you search for "directv" ..... you'll get a lot of hits.

Welcome and good luck.

We also had Direct Tv which was ok, but not that great and the cost was almost the same as Comcast. We switched to Comcast because we wanted cable modem for the internet and there is a discount if you have internet and Tv cable. So far we are satisfied with the cable Tv and really are happy with the speed of the internet service. We also did not have to buy all of the equipment. In fact we got a $400 dollar credit for giving our old equipment to Comcast.

With DirecTV, we sometimes lose reception when a thunderstorm rolls through. Then I wish we still had cable...

I love Comcast Digital Cable for the On Demand feature. My child has been "Nickelodion free" for about 6 months now and our home is a happier place. When it's cartoon time we watch The Jetsons, Between the Lions, Mr. Magoo, Johnny Quest, Mr. Rogers, Backyard Safari ... his favorites are two 1960's cartoons: Mighty Hercules and Wizard of Oz. Also, since we have HBO we have Curb your Enthusiasm On Demand as well as The Sopranos and Sex in the City. There are lots of On Demand movies, cooking show, history channel shows ... I am a big fan!

We love our Direct TV. Only a couple of outages in 2 years, less than Comcast. And we get more channels for less money. Just got Tivo and now can't live without it. Also have the football package which is unavailable on cable.

No cable modem though so that didn't factor in...we just have dialup.

I tried to get Directv, but my installer said that our roof was too steep, and it was possible that we would've had an obstructed view of the satellite. He also arrived at 6:30pm and said it was too dark to install the dish. That was the second time they tried to install.

Needless to say i went back to comcast, and since i have an hdtv set i'm very happy with my results.

The major upside i've heard with directv is Directivo, which will change your life.

If you do decide to get directv make sure you have a good line of site to the southern skyline, and find a good installation company (they really tested my patience).

Direct TV has been great for us! They offered us a dual input TIVO receiver for 99$ when we called to see if they could match The Dish offers that were floating around. Also, if you are worried about DSL, Verizon and I believe AT&T offer a discount on DSL if you do local and long distance with them. We did the Verizon Freedom plan with DSl and have no problems since the installation.

Comcast is supposed to be coming out with a DVR (like Tivo) this spring.

Tivo and DVR are similar but having used a DVR before I had Tivo - I would go with the Tivo. It has great features that the DVR doesn't have.

Tivo is a kind of DVR (which stands for digital video recorder). Tivo is a brand. I don't know the details of what Comcast will be bringing out.
