Just wondering if there are any local artist groups / organizations / clubs in the area? I've been spending a little too much time in the studio lately with my nose to the grind stone... and would like to get out and talk shop with like-minded illustrators / graphic designers / whoever. |

I'm one of those. Maybe a weeknight meet-up at St James Gate? |

"... I mean meet and talk about art." Parkah, if you're going to be talking about me, there's no reason to do it behind my back. I love talking about art. Count me in too, just post the time and the place... |

There was a group called SO/MA Art Net, or something similar... it met at the Blue Moon Diner every couple of weeks, as I recall. Not sure if it is still in existence. Of course, they don't have booze at the diner, so I never saw any point in going... |

There is a very active Artists Network alive and well in Maplewood/South Orange. A listing of contacts and events is, I believe, boxed in the News Record every week. Additionally, I bet you can find out the contact through calling the 1978 gallery or the Piero Gallery in South Orange. I will post the name and number of the contact once I myself once I receive it via email.

This is what I have learned about the artist's network discussed above: The Artists Network (SOMA ARTNET) is a calendar of local arts listings that appears (whenever they have room) in the News Rec., on the twotowns.org website (the Community Coalition), and 160 e-mail addresses (people who have asked to be informed). Artists who have events or ideas to share locally can send a brief description with contact info to: somaartnet@comcast.net before the end of the preceeding month. During the first 2 years of SOMA ARTNET there were open forums for poetry, art critique, etc. Now, separate from SOMA ARTNET, but populated by the same people, are regular poetry sessions at the Dancing Goat and Ethical Culture. There is also an every other week art critique at 1978....all independent of the SOMA ARTNET, but populated by many of the same people. All correspondence is by e-mail.

There is an artists' discussion group (Contemporary Artists Forum) that meets every other Tuesday night at 1978: Maplewood Arts Center. The group is led by Mikel Frank, and an exhibition of members' works is held at the center twice yearly. For more information, or to leave a message for Mikel, call the center at 763-6052. Or better yet, stop by the center this weekend for the opening reception of our latest exhibition, "Gods & Monsters" on Saturday from 1-4pm. 1978 Maplewood Arts Center is located at 1978 Springfield Avenue at Broadview. |

Hey Gang, Thanks for all the information... I'm glad to hear there is an active art scene in M/SO. Time to meet up with these groups and find out the *haps*. In-the-meantime, after a rough week with a new client, I'm ready for a drink. For anyone that'd like to join me, I'll be taking a breather at St. James on Wednesday (January 21st) around 7:30pm. Look for the red-headed guy at the bar with Boddington's in hand, contemplating why I do what I do parkah (aka mike p.) |
