I'm a long time Maplewood resident and longer time drummer. I'm overjoyed to see the number of really good musicians moving into town. I'd love to get together with some of you and play. The preference is some R&B, Soul, Funk, Blues.Any takers?

If you are referring to our local bassist extraorinare, I met him once but we haven't had an opportunity to play together. My next door neighbor, Herb is an incredible guitar player. I'm also hoping to find a horn player or two.

This area sure could use a band like that, don't you think, Chris?

Did somebody say "horns"?

There's always room for more funkification!

And speaking of that ...

Big Train will be wrapping up our busy December with a show Friday December 26 (This Friday!) at Orphan Annie's in nearby Stirling, NJ. Easy to get to from Route 78, Orphan Annie's is one of the premier rooms for live music in these parts. Show time is 9:30 and we're only playing one set. Soul Witness will follow with more R&B tunes. All this for the low, low price of $5 at the door ...

People get ready.

Does that mean you can play like Dave Garibaldi?. Those are some serious chops.

I would never purport to play as well as Dave. But his style is one that I have spent time emulating along with others like Clive Stubblefield Uriel Jones and Bernard Purdy.
My style is an amalgamation of many players whom I love and a bit of my own.
I believe in the church of the pocket and the groove.

Can you say "scumbag" boys and girls?

There's a double-whammy for ya!
'Cause that's a Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood quote, and Eddie Murphy played James Brown.

If anyone is intersted, there is a great show at Shanghi Jazz in Madison tonight. The band is called Trio Mundo. It consists of Dave Stryker on Guitar, Steve Slagle on Sax, Any McKee on Bass and Manolo Badrena on Drums and Percussion. It's a really wonderful group, mostly local players. Manolo is a joy to watch and listen to. it's a cross between latin, jazz, funk and worldbeat.

Mmmm Shangai Jazz. I went there to see the Claudio Roditi Quartet not too long ago. I had a really nice Pino Noir from Oregon... or Wyoming.. or one of those states over <----there.

Nice place.. not too bad on price if you sit at the bar on the nights they have a minimum. Sometimes I think there's no cover though. They have a site, too. I think it's just ShanghaiJazz.com

“I'm overjoyed to see the number of really good musicians moving into town. I'd love to get together with some of you and play.”

OK! So does anyone think Maplewood Village is really ready to support an intimate little Performers Café? Some place for locals to jam in the evenings, have some lite fare, coffee and desert... perhaps even a night to dance once in a while?

Lets say it opened from 6 to 11PM or so, maybe Wed. Thurs. Fri. Sat. and Sunday nights? Not to large a venue, say about 50 to 60 seats. Any interest?

It seems that towns all around us have great places for live music and yet Maplewood still has none. Montclair has Trumpets, West Orange has Cecils and Max Daniels, South Orange has the Laughing Goat, Madison has Shanghi Jazz, Union has Van Gough's Ear etc.

I was hoping that B. Hathaways would become a good spot for live music but that never seemed to happen.

Sure would be nice to have a place with good live music in town.
