There's a REALLY GOOD place to eat in South Ornage on First St. called Caribean Cuisine. It's a rather new place and my husband and I love it so much that we want to help get the word out so that it does well and stays open! The food is really delicious and fresh, the prices can't be beat, and the owners are friendly.

My husband and I are NYC transplants that just recently moved to Maplewood, and we are happily suprised to have found better Caribean food than we had in our West Village neighborhood. Please try out this place and help keep it afloat. They're a bit out of the way but well woth the trip!

We got take out there again last night.

It is REALLY good - huge portions, and inexpensive.
We've missed the readily available ethnic food of the city - and this place helps to fulfill it.
The employees are very nice as well.

I'm glad that people are finding this place. My daughter went in there last spring because she was trying to sell ads for an ad journal--I think they were newly opened at the time and no one was there. My daughter felt bad that she wasn't a customer.

Last night I had the curry beef with rice and
peas - oh and plaintains - YUM.

We've also tried the curries with the Roti. You can either get it wrapped up in the Roti (like a burrito of sorts) or with the Roti on the side.

This is where the help was well, helpful. You can go in a just taste a little to see if you like something. They even got us to try the goat!

We had them cater our daughters birthday party last year after me and the wife were walking by and noticed that it was open. I love their veggie dish with squash, spinach and potatoes with rice. The beef patties are great too!

On the advice of this board Hubby & I tried Carribbean Cuisine for the first time last night, and boy are we glad we did -- what a find!

We're both Carribbean food novices and so were a little afraid we wouldn't know what to order, but the staff there was sooo helpful, very nice and approachable, patiently answering all our questions and even letting us sample unfamiliar items before we ordered. Portions were huge, prices were very reasonable, and the food was fresh and delicious. The place was also impeccably clean, which was a real plus.

We'll DEFINITELY be adding this one to our list of favorite local restaurants!

The oxtail is phenomenal, my husband reports. I very much like the doubles (an appetizer -- flaky pastry surrounding a mix of potatoes and spices, kind of like aloo paratha), the coconut roll dessert (yum), the rice and peas, and the roti.

Forgot to mention what we ordered:

- vegetable patties (mixed vegetables in a pastry crust)
- chicken roti (tender boneless pieces of chicken in curry sauce, with potatoes and chickpeas, wrapped in a roti)
-- shrimp curry, with white rice and red beans and a piece of a sort of cheese-macaroni-loaf they call macaroni pie

Altogether it was enough to feed two people with large appetites for two nights, and the cost was just about $20 including drinks.

Yes, vegetarian friendly. I called while reading the menu online and told the woman we were vegetarian and she walked me through different options. The vegetable patties were good, as was the totally vegetarian callaloo soup. Callaloo (greens) and vegetables pureed with coconut milk, good with a nice kick! We also got aloo pies, shrimp curry w/ rice and peas (which are actually lentils), vegetable roti. The shrimp curry was much more well prepared than we've gotten elsewhere. We spent $30, but got dinner, lunch the next day and I still have enough for 2 lunches!

Amandacat mentioned earlier: "chicken roti (tender boneless pieces of chicken in curry sauce, with potatoes and chickpeas, wrapped in a roti)"

I have been to this place twice now - once when they originally opened and on Friday. I tried the chicken roti both times, which came wrapped up like a burrito. I did not like this dish because the chicken pieces inside of it were not tender and boneless, but solid bones with very little meat.

Minus the bones, the flavor was good, but maybe I don't understand how Carribbean food is supposed to be served and eaten. If something comes wrapped up like a burrito, That's how I expect to eat it. I don't want to have to unwrap the roti and pick through everything.

I also had doubles, veggie patties and callaloo which were great.

On Saturday I had take-out from Heart and Soul for the first time, which is right around the corner from Carribbean Cuisine. Excellent food - but only open on Fri, Sat, Sun. Their chicken comes on the bone, but I expect it that way since it isn't wrapped up in bread.

shh, I don't understand. Shrimp is not vegetarian... Fish and crustations and all that are not vegetables that grow in the sea.

Did the soup have chicken or beef (or pork, or fish, or anything)stock?

Well, I'm a fish eating vegetarian, but the soup was totally vegetarian, no fish or seafood, really vegetarian.

Kevin, they have both boneless and bone-in chicken rotis on the menu; I would have thought if you ordered your roti as a sandwich they would have automatically given you the bone-free variety but maybe you just have to be specific when you order. It really was delicious, you might want to give them another try!
