Okay, they are kinda groovy, but we are thinking of getting one. Does anyone out there have any advice for first time buyers? It would be off our deck. I envision nights in 15 degree temps, sipping some sort of something, watching the snow fall...am I crazy?? |

I say go for it. We built a deck on our last house, and included a built in hot tub. We used it year-round. It was wonderful. Ours was a cal spa. It held up well, but needed a few repairs through the years. There are probably plenty of resources on the Web that rate tubs. My main advice would be to make sure the access to the pumps and valves is easy and unobstructed. You need to get to those things whenever you clean the tub or change the water. Other than that, take your time and shop around. Go to dealers and sit in the tubs. There are a lot of different features and configuratiions to consider. I don't recommend any of the fancy jets. Some tubs have full back jets, neck jets, etc. We had all of those and never used them. All you need is the basic set up. Believe me, it gets the job done. Good luck. |

What Yossarian said. You want simple and decent sized. Although it would be nice to have the 8-person tub, if its going to be just you and the missus for the majority of the year, go with the smaller model. We are planning to install a deck & hot tub this summer and have found that for the money, a Hot Spring is the best value. Some dear friends have had theirs for years and they use it year-round without paying a lot for electricity, water and the like. |

Getting a hot tub was the best thing we did since having our kids, 20 and 25 years ago! Seriously. We put it outside, in a 6-foot fenced-in area that had complete privacy and protection from wind, and use it almost every day, and night. It's a great way to add a year-round "outdoor" room to the house, and we found that it gave us newly empty nesters a nice way to add new stay-at-home visiting time to our otherwise busy work lives. It was great to spend just a few minutes together in the morning, sitting outside in the winter, watching the sky turn light, or at night, admiring the night sky and stars through the bare branches of trees...and during the weekend, it felt completely decadent to be out in it mid-day.... It made us feel like we had a little bit of resort right in our back yard, and it was wonderful for my very bad back, especially first thing in the morning. We got a Marquis Spa, from RIX Pool and Spa in Hanover, or Whippany, or wherever Ridgedale Road crosses Route 10...details and other suggestions via e-mail, directly.

Nice tub, but isn't that fence illegal? Looks like it is over four feet. |

Not illegal if it's used to surround a "swimming pool" which is what hot tubs cound as. We checked it out. There also are other requirements for both the fence and the gate. Make sure to know them from Town Hall. --husband of an attorney |

Just curious, compsy: I don't see a door directly out to the hot tub in those pictures. Did you and your wife actually scurry around the outside of the house (I assume in robes) to the hot tub in the cold? Mighty intrepid, if so. BTW, we used to live very nearby to where you used to live, and we never suspected that that fence hid an outdoor hottub! |

You mean you think they use the hot tub while they are neked? Horrible, just horrible! What is happening to Maplewood??
Well I guess they could go out through a window |

jem: Yes, we did "scurry" in robes along the path shown, having exited the house from a (still pretty sheltered) door just around the corner (to the left in the gate picture). It was the preferred alternative to breaking through the kitchen or family room to gain direct access to the spa area, primarily due to the changes such a doorway would create inside the house. The "long" route worked fine, except in really windy weather! Now for my question: how do you know where we live(d)? And where did you live? (Private e-mail if you wish)...That fence was only visible from back yards, pretty much.... bobk: aw, we're busted! } |
