Can anyone recommend a local pediatric travel medicine specialist? My son will need malaria prophylaxis prescription and possibly immunizations. I'd like avoid the impersonal clinic we used a couple of years ago in NYC. Ghana, here we come! Thanks! |

Call the Summit Medical Group's travel doctors - they won't immunize kids (at least they wouldn't when I was there a year ago) but can recommend someone who will. They will write a prescription for malaria prophylaxis. Whatever you do ask for Malarone and refuse any suggestions for Larium.

Thanks, Eliz! I'll call them on Monday. FYI, I'm no expert, but I'm not convinced that Larium should be excluded from consideration. The severe side effects are apparently quite rare. My son took Larium a couple of years ago with no problems. The low pill burden was a real plus at the time. (Now I know to anticipate that and he is practicing his pill-swallowing skill with M&Ms!) |

Malarone only become available a few years ago and is considered very effective - why take a chance? I suffered through some nasty side effects with Larium and I would never wish it on a child. (I do understand about the pill burden tho...).
