How does this place stay in business? The aisles are always clogged with stock to be put away, and the shelves are mostly empty of stuff people actually need to buy. Gobs of 'seasonal' junk but very little choice when it comes to the basics. The staff (with one exception: the older, extremely helpful and competent woman at the check out) is clueless about where items can be found. They stumble through basic cash transactions. I'm sure it's a management issue; most other CVSs are not in such disarray and poorly stocked.

Minor correction but I think it is "Rite-Aid" and not "CVS". In any case if it is the Rite-Aid I could not agree more.

Certainly a big reason is that it is convenient...they are always open, they have decent parking & they accept virtually all insurance.

Plus, many people have no desire to use the Prescription Counter or to drive down to Millburn.

It is a Rite Aid - I rarely go there - and when I do, I get the feeling that the place is not clean, not just cluttered and unkempt, but a germy kind of dirty - I would never have a prescription filled there.

My mistake, you're right, it's Rite Aid. The filth angle aside, it also seems like this place has particularly short hours compared to other 'drugstores.' This type of retailer usually stays open until 9 or 10 each night, 7 days a week, but I've walked over there many times around 7 or 8 and found it clamped shut. This is a major problem for downtown South Orange -- you can't buy a damn carton of milk anywhere after 6 or 7 pm. It will not become a 'destination' until residents can count on buying even the most basic items after they get home from work. All we can get is donuts, basically.

I agree 100% with the problem with their short hours. Although I do think they recently extended their hours til 9 but I may be mistaken. Personally I would enjoy a "convenience" store to be open much later, if not open 24 hours.

WALGREENS in Vailsburg is open 24/7 just over the South Orange border on Irvington Avenue and they have 24 hour Security provided by the Newark Police Department.

Also, a drive up prescription service.

BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH RITE AID...besides the messy isles and poor service...

The Pharmacy does not stock many prescriptions and they typcially do not stock narcotic prescription such as pain killers forcing you to special order your prescription or go to another pharmacy.

The CVS on Millburn Ave is a disaster area, I have gone to pick up prescriptions and some basic stuff (milk etc) and have been there for as much as 30mins. The check outs are soooo slow and rarely more then 1 person working on them. The photo pick up is even worse!

I once got yelled at when I interrupted a clerk at CVS Millburn who was yakking on her cellphone, and holding up an entire line of customers. These kids -- and whoever is supposed to be 'managing' them -- are clueless on the basics of dealing with the public. This place is almost as bad as Rite Aid in other areas -- stock sitting on the floor for days, while basic items are nowhere to be found. The one dept. both these repulsive stores always seem to have plenty of inventory in are the awful, tacky 'seasonal' racks.

I believe that there is an ordinance in South Orange prohibiting stores from being open later than 11pm. I remember when Blockbuster opened and wanted to stay open til midnight there was some prohibition.

The Rite-Aid in S.O. gets a lot of business from Seton Hall students--the store sells milk, snacks, food, cleaning supplies, as well as the expected merchandise. In a way, it's subbing for a supermarket, since there's none within walking distance.
But it is really poorly run--dirty; understocked; ignorant staff; even the pharmacy is badly run--after receiving the wrong medication (they misread the prescription and didn't even seem to care) I no longer shop there for prescriptions (or anything else, for that matter). Three cheers for Drug Fair!

They typically lock the doors about 1/2 prior to the listed closing. Rite Aid was and maybe is recovering from a financial disaster which featured, among other things, massive diversions of funds to the chief stockholder's (or owner's) own pet projects, over expansion and the like. Too bad they were not taken over by CVS, Eckerd, Walgreens or the like.

The CVS on Valley in WOrange is really nice. I must say that though Rite Aid is bad - the Prescription Counter for set up, organization and cleanliness is the worst.

That CVS is primarily why I don't do my dry cleaning in SO anymore. I can drop off my prescriptions and dry cleaning in one trip. Hence, SO has lost my both my prescription and dry cleaning business.

There is both a dry cleaner and a pharmacy in South Orange at Scotland and S.O. Ave.(with plenty of parking in the back)> While you are there you can also pick up you video for the evening. No excuses, Gozergirl

Nice try. If I want a hassle with my prescriptions, I would continue filling them in SO. I have repeatedly complained to Rite Aid about their problems with no action taken. When my insurance allowed me to move my prescriptions to another store, I jumped at the chance. As far as my patronizing other businesses, I do so frequently, especially since it is most convenient for me to walk to them.

I went to Walgreen's on Irvington Ave for the first time this weekend. While the neighborhood is a little "scary", the store was awesome.

24 hour drive-thru pharmacy - talk about convenience. wow!

I think "Guess" is referring to Little Village Hall Prescription Counter.

GuessAgain: I don't think you could afford your prescription or video after going to that dry cleaners, WHY OVERPRICED. The prices for drycleaning in the village is outragous in general. You figure competition would correct this. The best dry cleaners was on Irvington Av next to the Getty in the brown house, but they closed last year. I go out of town now as well.

Prescriptions I get in Denville at the Rite Aid on Rte 53, right off of 80, however no where near South Orange. BUT HERE'S THE GIMMICK They actually drop what they are doing and fill your prescription while you wait and in only 5-10 minutes, Rite Aid takes that long just to get your name and address.

M.Scott - I've actually had good luck in the CVS in Millburn with prescriptions - last time was only a 10 min. wait. Plus, while I was waiting, I found some cool 75% off Christmas frames & cards - now if I can just remember next year that I have them and where I put them.

I live in the neighborhood of the Walgreen's on Irvington and there's nothing "scary" about it.

The Walgreens is pretty good and is great when you need milk at 11 pm, though it's busy and the lines can be long.

In our first year in town I think we tried every pharmacy in the two towns and were appalled at how much trouble we had at all of them.

CVS in Millburn seems to have gotten better (and I've heard from friends elsewere that the chain is on some national push to improve service).

Carolina Drug (on Millburn Ave) is good, though not fast. We use it especially for ongoing things and refills called in ahead.

Haven't tried Walgreen's in a while, but may give it another go.

Carolina Surgical is good and they have delivered on occasion.
