The New York Post? Will this raise or lower property values? Curt |

Given that the Post is the newspaper of choice for those who move their lips while they read, I doubt many of them will be moving out here. |

Cato: HAHAHA! This made me laugh out loud on this drab day when I really need it! Thanks. And even though I don't move my lips when I read, I am a sucker for the Post's cheap entertainment gossip! |

I was unimpressed with the article. One of these days someone will write something about this town that doesn't sound like a Hallmark card. After six months, we still have many neighbors who haven't bothered to come over and welcome us to the neighborhood, much less bring us food for two weeks! (Am I wrong to assume that it is their responsibility and not ours? Or could it be that they simply like their privacy, which is not a crime.) We are perfectly happy here, but the Nirvana described in the article it ain't. Keep in mind that real estate blurbs like this rarely say anything bad about a town--this is hardly journalism. Nothing was mentioned about the controversy over bad wireless communciations (wait until those Manhattanites find out about that!). Or what I consider to be the real diversity-mixer--the amount of GLBT families moving here. |

Rick can you elaborate on what neighborhood you are in? Also, if cell phone reception is now a criteria for where to move, ut oh! |

There's also NEVER a mention of the east side of town, as if it didn't exist. |

Will the amount of good PR improve the local schools? Taxes here are high, yet MW schools only score in the mid-range of statewide NJ testing. why is this? And yes, lots of blgt's here. The thing is to throw your own party/potluck. It's the best way to get folks out of their houses, and talking among one another. good luck! |

Rick: It is always easier meeting the neighbors during the summer when people are more apt to be outside. The only outside chatter I have observed in my neighborhood lately has been the chattering of teeth as we dash to and from our pre-heated cars. The snow storm tomorrow should present you with an opportunity to meet more of your neighbors since most of them should be out shoveling at about the same time. Just wait until you hear the first scrape of snow shovel or reving of a motor depending on the snow removal method of choice in your neighborhood. As to the question of who welcomes who, I think it is a joint responsibility. It is certainly not a breach of effort to walk up to a neighbor you haven't met yet and introduce yourself. Having kids in the school system, or a dog who gets walked on a set schedule usually accelerates the process. If you really want to meet all of your neighbors, try throwing a getting to know you party and putting invitation fliers under the doors of the neighbors you have become friendly with and those you still want to meet. |

Cookbook, CynicalGirl, and anyone else who is looking for Nirvana. It doesn't exist. But, as I have said before.... I LOVE THIS TOWN. This is, afterall, a town, a community of 23,000+ citizens of every walk of life. We have our issues and problems, but every place does. We just deal with them better. Rick, maybe you shouldn't just wait around for people to come knocking on your door in the dead of winter. Get outside, as Joan said, extend your hand. I am confident you will be happy you did. I hope you eventually view Maplewood and its citizens the way I do. It is not Nirvana, but it sure is a great place to live and raise a family. VoR |

vor, until your post I wouldn't have dreamed of commenting -- and I didn't. I'm too old to believe in Nirvana, and I've never much liked Kool Aid... |
