I've been setting up a company here in S.O. which will initially be run out of my home. The focus of the company is kitchen design and cabinetry. Everything is made to order. What's the best way to advertise? Yellow pages? How else? Also, here is a link to my site. I would appreciate any feedback (it's in its fledgling state). http://www.chatsworthofessex.com Thanks all. |

That is gorgeous! How does this type of cabinetry compare to semi-custom lines on the market? Do you do everything from design to installation? On all components or just cabinetry? I think one of your biggest challenges will be setting yourself apart from many other contractors, kitchen designers and cabinet shops. As far as advertsing, I would say you don't need an ad in the yellow pages, but a listing would be helpful. There are more local ways to advertise, and of course word of mouth. |

I agree with Shh your designs and workmanship look great. It appears that you are essentially setting yourself up as a custom design/build firm, although I would suggest trying to develop working relationships with some contractors and designers, which is easier said than done I have to admit. Taking out an add here on MOL might be a good place to start. Jamie and Dave get an awful lot of hits and home improvement topics are a big part of the board.

Wow! Thank you so much for the compliments! I'll try to be brief in answering your questions: - When I design a kitchen each component is designed specifically for that kitchen. The kitchen featured on my site has cabinets that are 35 1/4", 37", 19 5/8" wide. They were designed that way to match the architectural features of the room. In other words, nothing I build is off-the-shelf. - I have an architect, interior designer, and engineer. I use each as necessary. I do the actual cabinet design, build, and installation. My work includes cabinets, islands, tables, countertops, etc. If it's made from wood, most likely I've built a few. The reason I build the way I do is my love for cabinetry that was original to our homes from the turn of the century through the 30's. Also, when I purchased my first home (built circa 1919), there were no vendors who could accurately replicate the original cabinets. Thanks again for the compliments and suggestions. Greg |

Thanks. Actually, when I asked how they compare to others on the market, I meant pricewise too. And do you want to practice in my kitchen? |

The pricing for my work is probably going to be higher than the likes of Home Depot or Lowes. While some of the cost goes into craftsmanship, a lot goes into the materials, e.g., lumber, finishes, hardware. I'd be interested to take a look at your kitchen. Since I'm just starting out I need positive referrals. Just e-mail me and we'll set up a time. |

I would expect that your prices would be higher than Home Depot's, but what about Expo? Do you do a per linear foot base? |

My pricing is more in line with Home Expo. As with anything, it depends on the design and the materials. Though my pricing may be roughly the same, where I do compete is on the quality of the work and materials (I don't use fiberboard or melamine, only hardwoods and hardwood ply). I know shh and SoOrLady have expressed interest, what about others out there? Why would/wouldn't you go with custom-built cabinets? What hurdles do I have in front of me? |

As I see it - your hurdle lies in those who are doing a kitchen "make-over"/"re-do". While some would desire your quality, the costs may be more than their budget allows. I belive your audience will be those who have a "resoration" mindset, they will have already budgeted for the type of services you offer. |
