I had a local plumber thaw two kitchen sink pipes and a powder room pipe. Total time 1 hour 15 min.
Charge was $ 250 for HW $ 150 for 2 CW pipes and a $ 49 trip charge. Total charge $599. Needless to say I was very surprised. I called 2 other plumbers since and they say they charge hourly for pipe thawing. I am interested in feedback.

Sounds a little high but within the apparent (ridiculous) range. I had two kitchen pipes thawed out last Saturday and the cost was $450 (250 for the first pipe and 150 for the second) plus a $49 trip charge. Total time was about 1.5 hours. Ouch.

I wouldn't know if those prices are appropriate or not, but it sounds like maybe you two used the same plumber?

For a per hour rate, I will teach all of you how to thaw pipes and to help prevent them.

Privateline if you want the help.

Wow, these prices are scary . I need to have some plumbing work done in a short while . Were these guys goughing their customers because the customer had an immediate need and couldn't shop around ?
Is it better to go with a smaller business that has less overhead -fewer trucks, employees , insurance etc ? Someone that doesn't have to generate more income to cover expenses .
