We have a mouse problem, and the trap thing is not working (mainly because the children hide the traps to protect the mice). Does anyone have a proven mouse-catching cat they would consider loaning out briefly? |

Don't bother with a cat - get an exterminator. If you see evidence of one (mouse, not exterminator), there are many. We've had mice twice in eight years; it's disgusting, they carry disease and they won't go away because of one temporary cat. If your kids are old enough to hide your current traps, they're old enough to stay away from the poison traps the guy will leave. |

OK, thank you. I was trying to avoid dealing with dead mice in traps, but a professional TERMINATOR is probably the way to go. (Ahnold...)Any recommendations for exterminators? |

Sorry. Ahnold is an ex-Terminator and is now governor of California. |

Buckingham Pest control is local and can help with this. We've used him for other things (bats and squirrels) and he's been excellent. Don't have the number offhand, but he's in the book and lives in the Tuscan area. |

We used Apex. They're reasonable. give you a 90-day guarantee, and offer a 1 year guarantee at a higher price. Also, we never saw any dead mice; they seem to eat the poison and go die somewhere else. Wait, one dead one in a glue trap. Good luck. |

I also reccomend Buckingham. They are local, reasonably priced and get the job done. |

We had an excellent mouser when we lived in Manhattan. The problem was that she "hid" her trophies...in shoes, in the Hefty bag around unused pillows.....you can't imagine the stench & the ickiness of finding mummified mice in the most inconvenient places. She (the cat) also sat and watched one mouse perched on the edge of her food bowl, stuffing itself with Purina before waddling back to its hole in the wall. Mice caught in glue traps tend to scream & poop; it's horrible. We've had good luck here in Maplewood with those new traps that snap shut, like traditional mousetraps, but look more like binder clips (so you don't see their little heads -- AND you can reuse the trap). We managed to finally catch a Devious Ninja Mouse who was actually taking cheese and peanut butter out of the traps until the fateful day his luck ran out. He was a worthy foe and we buried him with all due honors and respect. ;-)

We called a local exterminator as well, but he sort of told us what he would do (which I was perfectly capable of). You MAY want to try yourself. Go get some mouse traps (I recommend the glue traps), bait them up, and wait. The worst part is finding the dead mice, especially on teh glue. I haven't heard screaming(??), but they do poop alot! I had no luck with teh binder type traps that snap shut. I think the mice were just too smal to trigger them. Constantly the bait was gone from them, so I started butting a dab of peanut butter int he middle of the glue trap. Bingo, we caught 4 of the little buggers. However, that one year guarantee sounds good. As soon as we thought we corrected the problem, we caught two more! Also, go around your house and look for places where these little things can get it (size of a dime) and caulk them up. I used the expanding spray caulk from home depot (about $10). Good luck! |

Re: results of mouse in glue trap. Sounds like it scares the shit out of them.

Thank you all, I think I'll call an exterminator (since the govenator is busy); I don't think I could bear to hear the cries of dying mice, nor the subsequent screams of hysterical children... |

Put the traps in a paper bag, then you don't have to look at dead mice. Just throw out the bag. |

It really works. I just can't avoid looking in the bag. |
