In keeping with the extreme makeover mania, USA Today is running a poll to determine whether Americans want to keep the profile of FDR on the dime or replace it with Ronald Reagan. Click away and cast your vote http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2003-12-05-reagan-dime_x.htm

That's called an ideological purge. I'm for waiting 20 years after death to put anyone's face or name on anything. No Brenden Burne Arena, no Reagan Airport, no Dan Quayle Department of Neurosurgery, etc. |

The good news is, FDR is winning 3-to-1. The bad news is, 1 out of 4 want Reagan. |

Wouldn't it be nice if, as the Republicans wish to honor one of their own, they could do it in such a way as to not piss of that large portion of the public that thinks Roosevelt was great? It's that same old zero-sum thinking that taints so much. How about this: instead of replacing a hero on a piece of currency, look for someone who's reputation is outdated or even undermined. Take Andy Jackson, for example. For one, he's probably rolling over in his grave because he's on a federal banknote in the first place. His near-genocidal native american policy is totally discredited. Put Ronnie on the $20. Or, put him on a higher-denomination bill. Can you even tell me who is on a $500 or $1000 bill, let alone who might be offended if those persons were to be replaced? (no fair looking it up, posted below) |

$500 - William McKinley; $1000 - Grover Cleveland. Grover was a nice boy from right here in Essex County, but no matter. I read that these denominations were discontinued in 1969, but what with inflation maybe some of them ought to be brought back.} |

There's a funny funny funny statue of George H.W. Bush in the Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport. In crudest hacked bronze, his tie is "dynamically" flying like Dilbert, with a rakish jacket over the shoulder, in a "robust" Robert-Longo '80's power pose. Funny funny. We should wait 'til people pass on for this sort of thing. |
