I realize this has been discussed in the past but ... I have finally had it with Verizon (price/customer service) and I am thinking of switching cellular providers. I'm on Headley Place (off Ridgewood, a few block from SO border) and Verizon service here is fine. My only serious problem areas (in this area) are downtown Maplewood and going through the Reservation but these areas seem to be problems for everyone. I have priced out a really nice plan with Sprint that will give me significantly more minutes and unlimited messaging but at approx. half the cost. So, having said that, anyone have any current experience with Sprint in this area? Thank you in advance. Marty |

"downtown Maplewood ......these areas seem to be problems for everyone" Can't tell you anything about Sprint, but my TMobile phone (formerly Voicestream) gets great reception in downtown Maplewood. Only bad area is by Maplecrest Park. TMobile also has good deals. |

We didn't get great Sprint reception in our house (Golf Island) which made the unltd nights and weekends less of a deal for us - it really wasn't good enough to make lengthy calls. We switched to Virgin as we don't use our phones an awful lot other than when travelling and for emergencies and it has worked out well - much cheaper too, for our level of useage. |

Thank you all for the responses. ML1 - Other than Maplewood Village, does Sprint PCS seem to work OK in the general area? Do any significant dead zones come to mind in the area? Thanks. Marty |

We have had Sprint for two years, and the service has been pretty good overall. I have been able to place and receive calls while in the village, and even the train station, which never worked with our AT&T phones. |

My daughter has Sprint and when home from school uses it regularly all over town including in Maplewood Center. The first dropped call she had was over Christmas vacation this year and the problem was solved by moving ten feet and trying again. I really can't understand why some phones work and others don't. Are some phones more powerful than others? |

When we went to purchase replacement phones a few months ago, we were advised not to purchase flip phones -- apparently they have weaker reception. I've been able to use my Verizon service in Maplewood Village, including the "dead building" where the Mapleleaf is located (didn't work with Sprint.) |

I've tried many except Sprint, and I think Verizon has the best overall reception and service hands down. And my latest phone is a flip phone and it works great. Have only run into dead zones up by the Clinton school, but once west of Prospect Ave. reception restored. Good luck. |

Had Sprint for 4 years and it was terrible in Maplewood. We just switched to Verizon and it works much better in town. Also, with Sprint there is no service in Penn Station or the tunnel when you travel into the city. |

Marty: I live on Headley too and have Sprint - it seems to work OK in my house and yard. Works OK in the village (outdoors, though). Maybe your TV is too big.

Yes, different phones have different quality reception. Look at the economics: we want small and light phones, which necessitates smaller batteries, so the phones must put out lower power. This necessitates smaller cells, which requires more towers. T-Mobile just improved service in my area, near Maplecrest Park. It's now bad, whereas it used to be virtually impossible. I'm moderately satisfied. Their service overall has been very good, and their family plan is probably still the best. The phone will work in Europe. T-Mobile and Cingular use GSM service which is the type of technology. The phone has a little "SIM card" in it which is your identity. Move the SIM card into any GSM phone, and then you have your number. This is good if your phone dies. You just borrow someone else's. T-Mobile's family plan gives unlimited calls to and from any T-Mobile phone. But it doesn't give free night service. Adding a phone to the plan is only $10 a month. We have 800 minutes per month among all of us, and we haven't gone over that in a few months. My girls pay their portions of the bill with their own money.
