I'll bet all the towns that are so close to RT 78, are experiencing the same thing |

I'll guess that the further you are from Newark, the less the car theft, it's not equal in all towns because of Rt. 78. |

Xavier, Thank you for your data. That is my point exactly. The fact that a car is stolen every other day in Maplewood is disgusting. I'm sick of seeing cop cars racing towards Irvington Avenue. My new credo is "Trespassers will be Shot." Please pass on to the illegal students some of you are harboring. Anyone know of any houses available in Scotch Plains? |

From our friends in the State Police. Go to: http://www.njsp.org/info/ucr2002/index.html Download the section on "Municipal-County Offense & Demographic Data." It contains the crime rate (and info on various type of crime) for virtually every town in NJ. |

cappy..do your research. Scotch Plains is about as close to Plainfield as we are to Newark. And let me tell ya, I have gotten lost over there and been spooked. Try Iowa "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" Wayne Gretzky |

Can one determine the profile of a typical car theft in Maplewood? Most likely street or neighborhood, time of day, type of car? I would think that would be key to reducing it... |

One target item for sure: new Nissan Maxima headlights. Can be popped out before the car alarm can be heard. |

Actually any car with litronic headlights or High Intensity bulbs are at risk. These assemblies typically cost around $1,400 and as patty mentioned can be easily removed. |

Reading the News Record, it seems most of the cars are stolen east of Valley Street. Jeeps, as Straw found out, are always popular. Many of the cars are very pedestrian older model Hondas and such. From time to time there will be a rash of a certain make being stolen. A couple of weeks ago it was Audis. Go figure. My suggestion is buy a good alarm and use it. Also as Sporty points out, any car with high intensity lights is a real risk and I wouldn't buy one myself, although I really like the new Maxima. |

Cars are mainly stolen for 4 reasons: 1. for economic gain (headed to chop shops, to foreign shores); 2. for personal thrill, like doing donuts at intersections at 3AM; 3. to be used to commit other crimes (street crimes like robbery and burglaries, to steal other cars, etc.); 4. and because it's so easy. Obviously, there is good mount of overlap of reasons, but there is a discernable pattern in Essex County. High-end cars (like Audis of all stripes) tend to get stolen for reasons 1 & 2. More non-descript cars, as such as older domestic models (including minivans), tend to get stolen for reason 3 (and for parts). Many older model Japanese models (esp. Hondas) get ripped off b/c they are so easy to steal (and for parts). Young car thieves start off on these cars (and practice on them) before they move onto more "difficult" cars (like newer Mercedes, which are practically impossible to steal b/c of their security system). The single best way to deter car thieves is to install a kill switch. Relatively cheap and very effective. P.S.--All this info is courtesy of the head of ATTF (Auto-Theft Task Force) of Newark PD.

If you read the latest blotter, it would seem that keeping your car parked in your locked garage, instead of in your driveway or an unsecured garage, would also keep it safe. |

I wish I had a garage to lock my car in. Shooting car thiefs in the face will also decrease the number of thefts. Xavier, Should I go to an alarm shop or a regular garage to get a kill switch? |

Mike I would guess an alarm shop - don't get more than a kill switch - everyone has an alarm which nobody pays attention to when it goes off. I thought I'd miss the alarm in my new truck but the kill switch and coded key are enough. |

Given that SO has about 17,000 vs Maplewood about 23,000 people -- not only is car theft itself higher but the rate of car theft is higher, too. And according to the data, SO has a smaller police force. Wonder if there is a direct correlation? And, going on the proximity theory (If not Route 78, perhaps Springfield Ave or SO Ave) -- there have to be a couple of neighborhoods where this problem is the greatest. A place for a (joint) police task force to concentrate perhaps? Pete Pete |
