I'm bored with the sofa, chair and ottoman in my living room and decided to try and have custom slipcovers made. I want to do a collage effect, where you use several fabrics on different components of each piece.
I've been around and called several different places, and I'm not feeling 100% confident aboout any of them. This is a pretty expensive project so I'd like to find someone who will do a good job.
Any recommendations? I can pick out the fabrics, the trick is the positioning and the sewing.

There might be a little red.
Am I THAT predictable? Yes, I know it.
We're painting the currently red walls a more neutral (gasp!) hue. Maybe there will be less shouting in the SHH house!

The Mill Ends Shop in Union does slipcovers, they are located on Stuyvesant Ave.

Yup, that's one of the places I've already been to. As of now they're my top choice, but I'm not totally convinced they understand what I'm going for.

I used Ultimate Upholstery to do a sort of odd combination of piping and upholstery on a chair and ottoman, and they did a nice job. If you want to come over and take a look, shh, you're welcome to. I know it's not slipcovers, but I think they can do a good job with whatever you give them.

Terminal Mill Ends does very good work actually. Make sure you use one of the designers there to help you and this month is the sale I believe.

Thanks Jem. I will call and see if he'll do slipcovers too.

I was working with a designer at TME. I liked him, and might go back. I was looking for other options for various reasons.

Actually, I know that they do slipcovers - I was at one point thinking of having a new slipcover made to match a couch that I thought I was going to use in the small front room of our house. I had fabrics all picked out (and it was going to be another sort of odd combination) and the guy from Ultimate gave me a price to do the job, but then I realized the couch was too big for the room and I abandoned the project.

Thanks Jem. I called him this morning. He seemed very nice.
Where did you pick out the fabrics? His place or elsewhere?

Shh, i think i know who you are talking about, and he is very nice (young, handsome, richard i think??). fabric prices there are good, and you don't have to pay a Customer Own Material (COM) upcharge, as many places charge. Also, if anything goes wrong like seaming, etc., it's all their responsibility. they have some nice stock fabrics, but often try to steer you toward the special order which can get very pricey and time consuming.

They have lots of sample books at Ultimate, but they'll also work with a fabric supplied by you. I had actually gone to TME to look at fabrics to compare prices, and the prices of fabrics from sample books were pretty much the same.

Gemini, how'd you know? I saw someone I know in there...was it you?
My problem wasn't with him, I liked him, but he was trying to steer me towards doing something a lot more subdued than I really want. Also, I was a little concerned about looking through $65 per yard fabric. I am trying to do a little more research myself into fabrics (online is easier for me than the store, just so I can get more ideas before I go in again).
Pricing at all these places for labor is comparable, it's going to run me about $1100 or so for the three pieces. So, if I can save $$ on fabric (I'll need about 35 yards!) it will make a difference.

Shh, I haven't been in there for about 7 months, but it's a small store. I would recommend looking at bolt fabrics (I always like them better, b/c you can unroll a bunch and really see what fabric looks like), plus they tend to be much less expensive. The salespersons generally steer you away from them, though (not chi chi enough, I guess...). Calico has some nice stuff, too.

I purchased some SureFit slipcovers, but I'm not really happy with them. I got the correct size for my loveseat, but it still is bigger than the piece and all the tucking in the world doesn't make it look like the pictures in their catalog. Plus, once you sit on it, it wrinkles and all the tucks come out. I'm going to have slipcovers made to order. February is usually a good month for slipcover/upholstery sales.

Gemini, I saw one bolt fabric I liked, but they didn't have more that I was looking for in stock.

I don't think Surefit will work either. Good for a quick fix, but they look undone rather quickly.
