Come in from the cold this weekend and enjoy some great art at 1978: Maplewood Arts Center, located at 1978 Springfield Ave at Broadview. The Center is proud to present "Gods & Monsters: The Mask Project," opening Saturday, Jan. 17, and featuring new paintings by artist, poet, and collector S.K. Duff, along with exquisite masks, textiles, and ethnographic objects from around the world, part of the artist's own extensive collection. These objects provided the inspiration for Duff's newest works, which are rich, densely painted watercolors that incorporate and transform the imagery from these objects--demons and spirits, gods and monsters--in an exploration of varied responses to universal goals. The public is invited to the opening reception this Saturday, Jan 17, and the show will run through Feb. 1. Gallery hours are Sat. and Sun. 1 to 4pm, and by appt. Other events are planned throughout the two-week run, including a poetry reading from the artist's current manuscript, "Hope Plays Hangman," (Fri., Jan. 30, 8pm), gallery talk (Fri., Jan. 23, 8pm), and children's mask-making workshops, conducted by the artist (6-8 year olds, Sun. Jan. 18, 2-3:30pm; 9-12 year olds, Sun. Jan. 25, 2-3:30pm). The fee for the workshop is $25 per child, materials included. For info or registration, call SK Duff at 762-2268. For info on Maplewood Arts Center, call the center at 763-6052

This show is definitely worth a look see. The shadow puppets, ceremonial masks and batik clothes are museum quality and beautifully displayed. They add a special dimension when viewing S. K. Duff's original art work on display since the motifs, symbols, colors and patterns in the paintings are so clearly based on these beautiful artifiacts.

My husband and I knew S.K. Duff many years ago when we were also artists. Little did we know that the whole time we have lived here he's been living less than a mile from our house!

Anyway, we went over during the opening to renew the acquaintance and guess what--it's a great show! He's been working hard at his craft all these years. You really have to get over there and check it out.

We dragged the art-hating kid and the neighbor's art-hating kid and they LOVED it (not to mention the delicious snacks served during the opening--S.K. Duff comes from a generation of artists that were sometimes known to live on gallery opening food). They were infaturated with the variety of the masks: horned devils, and multi-footed tongues, and a large oval shaped one that look like the original inspiration for "Nightmare Before Christmas." It's museum quality stuff and you only have to park on or near Springfield Avenue to see it.

After the opening we checked out the Maplewood Hobby shop next door which has lots of plastic models and miniature WarZone creatures (a world I know nothing about that has quite a following) and many different kinds of dice of all colors and shapes--my kid ended up with a box of blue speckled with orange dots. Good way to end the afternoon.

What a fantastic show. SK Duff's collection of primative masks and his art work are awesome.
He said the exhibit is going to be up at least another week due to widespeard popularity.
The center is open Sat & Sun 1-4
