Looking for recent experiences in Maplewood w/ Verizon DSL. Looking to dump Comcast for Direct TV and was considering dumping their on-line service as well. Can't stand their yearly 8-10% increases in fees.
Thx

Is Comcast raising their rates again? If so, I'm outta there. I am paying about $150 per month between my Comcast Internet connection and digital TV (with HBO and Cinemax). I will gladly drop one of the services to compensate for any upward rate adjustment.

I have helped many people in town install routers so that they can connect their home and biz computers with the computer that is attcahed to the Internet. A lot of them have Verizon as their DSL provider, and they seem to be fine. And their tech support is top notch.

I also have Verizon DSL - no problems, works great. If it is slower than cable, I haven't noticed.

I have a home network, part wireless, part wired, 2 PCs & 2 MACs. Everything A-Ok.

Comcast is raising the price of their cable bills by about 8%. Depends on what services you have. My cable bill was about $62, will go to around $67. Seems like just a few years ago it was in the low 40's.........

My biggest issue with Verizon DSL is that I need to email large graphics files all the time and 99% of the time I can't send them because it "can't connect to the server" or some other nonsense. Though they claim that you can email up to an 8MB file, I sometimes have trouble emailing a 200k file and when I get them on the phone, they tell me that their system is not really set up to handle attachments!!!

Other than that I've been satisfied so if you don't need ot send large attachments then you shouldn't have any problems and I like being able to use the Mac Mail application instead of AOL or having to go to a website to check email.

Verizon DSL is asynchronous. The inbound speed is about five times faster than the outbound speed. If you are sending out large files, you will notice the slower outbound speed.

Believe me I've noticed. Most of the time it won't send them at all so I opened a free Yahoo! email account just to send files and set it up so if anyone replies to that email it will get forwarded to my Verizon account. Otherwise, I just upload Zip files to my server and have people download them from there.

Love DirecTv & Verizon DSL, and Verizon cell service. HATED Comcast. Their service and reception sucked BIG TIME!

Another strike against Verizon. Their email server is down today. Unbelieveable. This may have been disatrous if I had been in the middle of a project. Little by little thay are losing my confidence. It's like being nibble to death by ducks...

Comcast has also had email outages in the past, so switching from Verizon DSL to Comcast would not guarantee you 100% up-time.

For years, I have maintained a Yahoo email account as my primary mail account. In addition to Yahoo's servers being fairly reliable, you can check your email remotely from anywhere in the world. It was very helpful last summer when I was in Europe for 3 weeks.

Go with Speakeasy. In the 4 years that we've had them, they have only been down twice. If you call customer service, you are never on hold for more that 5 minutes and they play the best hold music: Phish, Sundays, Eric Claypton, Peter Yorn, The Dead etc.
