Gotta be one of the most bone-headed decisions lately. What, did some of our district leaders want a 5 day weekend? Closing the schools because it was too cold out was unbelievable! I'm sure that happens often in places like Chicago, Rochester, Alaska!! How 'bout the kids and teachers just wear more warm clothing on cold days? Hey, Administration, ever think of trying delayed opening like the rest of the tri-state area did? And, while I'm at it, you should've done the same for Thursday's early snow. At this point, I'm kinda hoping we have TONS of snow days, so you can all work through July!! |

Agreed, Most teachers are lazy to a degree as most of us remember from our school days. This is just another example why when teachers ask for more money it's important they be reminded they have part time jobs. BUSH/CHENEY IN 2004.. |

A troll post? I'm by far the greatest poster in the history of your little web site. I've been quoted in the Star Ledger. My last thread "Gore=Idiot" stands at well over 100 posts in only two days. Just another reason why I have what you need. I'm the Straw that stirs the drink, and the reason I still have my pass word is because you know this to be true.

It's the primary job description. Anyway, I think the schools were closed because there was fear the buses wouldn't start. (!) |

I don't remember my teachers being lazy. Apparently Strawman had the wrong teachers. Perhaps that explains everything. |

No, he got it right about the cold weather. If you have to go to work, you go. Only pampered teachers get a by, because they might have to warm up their cars in the coldy-cold. Why is Leslie Gore an idiot? DWM |

With the cost of energy as high as it is, it might have been cheaper to keep the interior temperature of our schools at lower but pipe-safe temperatures and keep the children and teachers at home where they would have to pay for their own higher day time heating. Sounds like the fiscal conservatives at work cutting back at what we have to spend for our school taxes. |

Straw, Great post up above. You achieved the unimpressive level of "not clever, but mean-spirited." |

Well, if anyone can explain to me how I would have gotten my second grader and kindergartener to school safely—considering our school does not permit pick ups and drop offs anywhere near the front door—I could understand the fuss, but truth of the matter is, it would have been impossible. |

The primary reason they closed the schools is because of the kids that walk, they were afraid they might get frostbit. It is a good decision to close the schools when it was as cold as it was on Friday. |

No offense Shh but it is certainly possible. I grew up in Montreal where an average January day was like yesterday here. I walked to grade school every day and trust me that I never suffered from frostbite and neither did any other kids I know. It's taken me several years of living here to get used the weather neuroses of this area (my favorite is the supermarket stock up) but yesterday took the cake for me. I frankly thought it was beautiful - the sun was shining and it was lovely and crisp. My 5 year old was outside playing in the morning. |

In places where this sort of cold is more common, people are more likely to be prepared and aware of how to avoid frostbite--and thus safer.

For next time - recipe to avoid frostbite: 1 winter coat/jacket 1 pair boots 1 scarf 1 hat 1 pair mittens 1 healthy dose common sense And by the way most of the kids I see here are way more bundled up than kids in colder climes. I suppose if parents were apt to send to their kids to school barefoot there should be concern. Frankly our kids are in more danger from being run over every day by impatient, inconsiderate parents at pick up time then they will ever be from "frostbite"! |

I resent the fact that you are dumping on TEACHERS about schools being closed when the decision was made by the superintendent. It is my understanding that factors such as road conditions, ability of buses to start, as well as whether teachers who live far away from South Orange-Maplewood could arrive in a timely manner are all part of the decision. The Essex County police are also consulted. I would much rather have the schools closed than have to worry about my kid walking to school in the coldest weather we have had in 50 years! Find someone else to kvetch about, okay? |
