Anyone have a recommendation for a good portable radio? I don't think I want the Bose radio, because I have read some good things about Grundig and Kloss and they seem to be better values, unless Im wrong. I want something that might provide better reception in semi-difficult reception areas of the house and has some portability. Thanks for any thoughts. |

I have heard good things about the Henry Kloss designed radio - made by Tivoli Audio. They now also make a battery powered version apparently. |

we have the Tivoli in our kitchen. it is an amazing sounding radio, and it's only about as big as a car radio. it's not battery powered, so it's not really a "portable," but at a weight of about a pound and a half, it can certainly be carried from room to room. definitely check it out. |

The Kloss is a great sounding radio and much better value then the Bose. Unfortunately, I still need to add an extra antenna to get WFUV which is a shame. |

Thanks..those confirm some of my homework and some of my concerns...great sound but not necessarily better reception. Would the Grundig shortwave models be any better with reception? I guess I could propose a radio tower for the golf course since I live close enough. And as I type this, I received a phone call from a fine Maplewoodian I know from offline, who has read my post and is going to lend me their Kloss to try out and see if I get good reception. Thank you! |

gee Hank, now I feel guilty that I didn't offer to lend you my radio. I just realized now that you were the one who started this thread. I must have been more tired than I realized last night.

Hank, I'll assume you're not joking and offer this explanation. A radio station can't have antennas at different sites. Cell phone service has towers all over the place because you are in one cell or another. When you move from one to the other, the tower instructs your phone to change frequency, because you can't use two signals on the same frequency. If your radio can't pull a signal in, you either get a more sensitive radio or you connect a better antenna to it. Unfortunately, few radio makers tell you how sensitive their products are. Tom, Thanks for the explanation, but I was joking about the radio tower. Im not joking about the radio however. Ive been "test-driving" the Tivoli Kloss One that an MOL reader/non-poster was very kind to lend me. It has really nice sound, warmer/richer, and a bit better reception than I was getting with a standard portable, and I will try it out at a few different times of day to check the reception (since it does tend to vary). One reason why the Grundig radios appealed to me was because they make some claims to better reception, although the Tivoli Kloss sound will be tough to beat for the price Im guessing. |

I was very lucky to be given a Delphi radio for Christmas which plays the satellite XFM channels. There are 120 digital channels and the best thing is that they don't have those irritating commercials! (I have a feeling that it was purchased in Best Buy, or maybe Circuit City) Ours is hooked up to an existing JVC CD/Radio player we aleady have, but we also have the kit so we can put the radio in the car (and take it into the house again) I love it - and particularly enjoy listening to the BBC World Service instead of previously only getting it via internet. You can see the channels here, lots and lots of choice of various music genres and talk/news radio: http://www.xmradio.com/index.jsp Made In England

Please keep us posted on a good radio for picking up WFUV from Maplewood. Preferably one where you don't have to buy extra antennae. You know, the kind where you just plug it in? Thanks. |

Maybe we should start a Friends of WFUV on MOL club? I used to listen to FUV all the time when I commuted by car, but I can't get decent reception at home. Perhaps with our prodding, they will buy a more powerful transmitter Hank -Let us all know how the Tivoli experiment goes - you too ML1! |

ashamed to say my radio is used 90% of the time to listen to sports while I'm cooking or doing dishes.
(but the reception is great, and the announcers sound like they're in the room with you) I'll have to try the FUV experiment. |

FUV also has streaming audio from their site. They have fundraisers once a year or so, maybe you can write a letter asking for a better transmitter to be part of what they raise funds for. I usually listen in the car too. |

If you are a WFMU fan, a larger FUV transmitter is a bad idea! The increased transmission power will drown out FMU's ability to transmit at it's current radio dial location. Bad idea! |

I like WFMU also but it's frustrating, not to be able to get a clean signal for WFUV without hanging the antennae upside down in a window. It especially irks me on Saturday night when Scelsa's on (I frequently have to run errands to get a clear signal in my car-I think my family's on to me). |

Id like a stronger FUV signal, but not at the expense of the existence of FMU. FMU is truly listener-sponsored free form radio. FUV, an excellent station, seems like a corporate conglomerate in comparison. Now as for the signal research..Im getting a stronger signal for FUV in the kitchen than I had with previous radios, but not crystal clear. The Tivoli Kloss has an antenna and a really long cord (the cord acts as an antenna too..doesnt it?). But calling any Grundig owners out there...hows your signal strength? The Grundig ads state theyre better at tough to get signals and I even noticed an under the counter model on their website. The Tivoli sound though impresses me..even talk radio shows sound better. No interference when the dining room light is on. WNYC AM and FM are very clear..BGO very clear...FMU is fine too. Im going to keep this radio (another couple of days I mean, for more test-piloting..dont want to get the owner nervous!). |
