We've live in Maplewood for a few months and always have difficulty finding Route 22. Everyone says there is great shopping there but not for someone who can't get there :-)We live off of Wyoming Ave |

Wyoming to left on Millburn Avenue, then right on Vaux Hall at the temporary bridge. Cross 78 and take the first right which is Liberty. Follow to end and you are at Route 22 West. I would suggest watching the SpeedChannel on cable before going if you aren't familiar with NJ shopping highways to get in the mood. NJ shopping highways can be a little intimidating to the uniniitiated or the timid. |

that's the best way to get to the Union part of Rt. 22 which is where many of the big stores are. If you're going to Mountainside or further west just take Springfield Ave. west. At Springfield, continue straight onto Miesel Ave. which will take you to Rt. 22. And as bobk hinted Rt. 22 is quite a driving experience. |

I also suggest you look at a map and try to pinpoint the stores you want to get to. There are many back ways to get to 22, so you spend as little time on the road as possible. For instance, to get to Target, you would probably want to take Valley Street straight until you cross over Morris Ave (it becomes Meisel, this is the town of Springfield). Continue on Meisel for 2 or 3 miles (guessing here) and you'll see a shopping ctr. on the left with Bob's and Linens N Things. If you continue farther, crossing over 22, you can make a right turn and end up on 22 East. Get on 22 East, and 1/2 mile or so ahead on your right is Target. A little past Target is another huge shopping ctr. with Home Depot, Walmart, TJ maxx, etc.

One more cautionary note about Route 22, which I avoid whenever possible, which is pretty much most of the time. Whoever designed that road seems to have had a demolition derby in mind. In order to get to the stores on the opposite side of the road from the side on which you're driving, you have to cross 3 lanes of traffic, get into the lefthand turn lane, and then immediately cross another 3 lanes of traffic to get to the right lane to exit for the store. And there's always lots of traffic, so this is never easy. I hate Route 22. |

I go to Route 22 when there's something there and I don't know where an equivalent place is. I agree that driving there is a horrible experience, and I generally have tough nerves for bad traffic. I hate all the NJ highways with the concrete barriers and jug handles, but Route 22 is the worst. Route 10 is mild by comparison. Bit by bit, I am learning how to shop in places other than Route 22. I can still go to Costco there, because there is a backroads way of getting in and out of there. To answer Jeffrey's question more directly, if you know the address of the place you are visiting, you can get directions at Mapquest. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Shh's route is probably the better one. Plus, if you turn left at the last light just before going over 22, you can get to the big Barnes & Noble's without actually driving on 22. But for peace of mind, you have to get yourself one of these:

Is Target now on Rt. 10? I heard that rumor and if so, I have no reason to drive to 22. 10 has everything I am looking for, if I am looking to super store shop which is rare. In fact, I have never driven on 22. My super aggressive husband driver takes me there when I want to go. I'd be too nervous to take the plunge and pull out. |

Target is on Rt. 10 next to Costco. You can get into it from the Costco parking lot or from the Rt. 10 entrance. |

I hate 22, so much so that I'll get on in Springfield and rather than turn around, I go all the way to Union and get off just past Chucky Cheese. Westbound 22 is a bit more friendly - from the Springfield entrance that is. |

I learned to drive on Route 22. To this day, I still have a soft spot in my heart for it. |

Ha ha ha! My very first day ever of driving in the United States was on Route 22 on a busy Saturday afternoon. I had been driving for over 20 years - but I'm from England where one drives on the left, and had moved here directly from Singapore where they also drive on the left. We had just arrived and I was still getting over jetlag, but many of our electrical items were on the 220v which would fry on the US 110v system....so my husband who had moved over a few weeks before me insisted that I get some driving practice in. Imagine driving in a new country in a new minivan with the steering wheel on the 'wrong side', driving on the 'wrong side' and trying to drive on Route 22 to buy essential items for the house, but not having a clue where to buy these things! I pretty much freaked out and had a major row with my husband for inflicting such misery on me. Of course there are hardly any signposts anywhere and we couldn't even find our way home! (It was many weeks before I even knew what they sold in Target, a pity really because we could have bought loads of things in there!) Why is New Jersey so badly signposted? We've had to succumb to having a GPS system in the car. I do honestly feel for any American who has arrived at Heathrow airport and picked up a rental car there for the very first time..... Route 10 is the place to go, much safer and friendlier travelling, and off the top of my head, I can't think of too much that 22 has that 10 doesn't, except for Red Lobster. Go up South Orange Ave to the far side of the Livingston Mall, that's Eisenhower Parkway. From there you can go straight out to what used to be the the Rt 10 circle then head West. If you want to avoid the circle, about half a mile past the Livingston Mall on Eisenhower, make a left at the traffic light, and that will also bring you out to 10 (Walnut Street I think?) The only stores you're missing that way are Olive Garden, Gary's Liquors (good booze prices) and Pathmark (if you had gone straight through the circle, that is). West of the circle you're missing Zany Brainy, Barnes and Noble, Joseph A. Banks and Staples. Some of the stores westbound on 10 are Old Navy, Circuit City, Border's Books, Linen's & Things, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Costco, Chili's, The Avenue, Best Buy, Daffy's, Party City, Michael's, Rag Shop, Boston Market, Sports Authority, Dick's Sporting Goods, Home Depot (slight improvement over Springfield Avenue, Office Max, Marshalls, Taco Bell, Macaroni Grill, etc. A little further up Rt 19 in Morris Plains there a Kohl's and Kay Bee Toys Eastbound is a little lighter so far as stores, but there's Ethan Allen, Einstein Moomjy carpets, PC Richard, Pier One, CompUSA, Toys are Us, Eastern Mountain Sports and Gateway Computers. Also a couple of miles out of the way there is a WalMart, TJ Maxx, Lane Bryant and Sears Hardware on Ridgedale Avenue in Cedar Knolls (Not East Hanover)at the old Morris County Mall. Ridgedale is well marked, it is the first intersection west of the Rt 287 interchange. |

Miss L Toe, driving out of Heathrow couldn't compare with what you experienced on your first day driving here. I drove out of London in a rental car, and at the time, I hadn't had much driving experience of any kind, and even less with a manual transmission. I'm sure, however, it was not as bad as what you went through. I did bang the left wheels against the left curb (kerb to you) a few times, but after a while, I was on my way. Drove all over England and Scotland. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

I have a strange fondness for Rte. 22. I grew up in New Jersey, but had never been to Maplewood/South Orange. Something about Rte. 22 feels like "home" to me. I find driving it strangely exhilerating. Also, it's much closer than Rte 10, isn't it? I always take Meisel because you can get on both east and westbound there. |

Wow. I am so glad I am not the only person who gets a fit of nerves when driving on Rt. 22 - I thought it was just me. My first experience on 22 was also when I was new to NJ, (I'm American, but had been living in Canada for 6 years where drivers are very polite :-), no idea where I was going, very early post-partum and with a tiny screaming infant in my backseat. I remember it with horror. I'm frankly surprised that I survived the day.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone, too. I thought New Jersyans (Jerzoids?) were annured to it. Here is the problem with these NJ highways. How can you browse the stores' signs if you have to go 50 mph in the right lane? If you miss something, you have to go a half mile ahead, take a jug handle U-turn, go about two miles the wrong way, take a jug handle U-turn, and then NOT MISS your target again. I have gone in circles like this many times because I miss a landmark or something. My mother in law visited and drove her car. My wife was in the car with her, but I wasn't there. My mother in law has lived all her life in NY state and Florida. They don't have jug handles there, at least not many. MIL wanted to turn around and was waiting for a light at which to turn left. My wife told her that there are no lights on 22. MIL didn't believe her and kept on driving. Sure enough, there are no lights in or near Union. Jug handles are the only traffic control, such as they are. By the way, going east on 124 from Millburn, if I miss the giant jug handle that goes around the block and goes into Springfield Ave, there is no left turn or anything like it for miles. I end up having to go deep into Union to turn around. Sometimes, the price of efficiency, if you can call it that, is very high in NJ. I probably would have moved out of NJ if I didn't share legal custody of my kids with my ex-wife. I'm stuck here until the kids grow up, even though I have physical custody. Choosing Maplewood was a compromise of sorts. Tom Reingold the prissy-pants There is nothing

Joan - I though they were down in that section across from Zany Brainy - on the east bound side between Walnut and Eisenhower. I could easily be mistaken, they could either be gone from there, or maybe it's another outfitters - I haven't passed by there recently. I just checked their web site, and there was no listing. Sorry. I'll take a look next time I'm through there, though.

Bill - no the place you're thinking of is I think, "High Country Sports" (or something very similar) which you are mistaking for EMS. It's just a few hundred feet after the Raceway gas station at Walnut St/Rt 10 , heading Eastbound ie. towards New York/Newark. There's a very nice 'Cosi' coffee bar & sandwich shop sharing the parking lot. 'High Country Sports' (or whatever it's called) sells snowboards, skis, bindings, clothing and does ski rentals etc. It's not cheap there, either. We prefer Pelican Sports which is a much larger store with a wider variety. It's also on Route 10 but going Westbound - it's at Morris Plains, a couple of miles after where the Rt 287 joins Route 10. I've been to EMS at Paramus but again it seems very expensive compared to Campmor which is next door! Made In England
