Stupid old me backed my 2003 Toyota Highlander into something at about 5 MPH. The result was several cracks in my rear bumper. (What are these bumpers made of? Fiberglass? Plastic? Aluminum?) Anyway, since I am bound to do this again over the next 3-1/2 years of my lease, I want to repair the bumper temporarily. At the end of my lease, I will spring for a new bumper. I would like to try to repair the bumper myself. Does anyone have experience with these bumper repair kits? There is also something from 3M called Scotch-Weld which is supposed to be good for these kind of things (although expensive). A body repair shop may charge $600 for a new bumper and paint job, but I do not mind spending $200 on this 3M repair kit if I can do it myself. As an aside, does anyone know how to take off the rear bumper? It looks like it may just lift off. Thanks. Marc www.millburnweb.com

Marc, I’m on my third leased car, and my family leases like crazy. I wouldn’t worry about replacing the bumper. They won’t even look at it. I think that it might be listed under “Normal wear and tear”. We’ve all had a cracked bumper and have never been charged.

I think I cracked the bumper up too badly for them not to notice.. plus, it's ugly. So, I would like to try to repair the thing. I would be surprised if the Toyota inspectors would regard it as normal wear and tear. This plastic stuff is really easy to destroy! Thanks anyway. Marc |

ouch! I can sympathize! There are a couple of different national franchises, Colors on Parade, Aerocolours, Bumper Medic and the like who do the same kind of work for used (and new) car lots. They don't do any metal work, just plastic trim and bumpers. And they're less than half what a body show would charge for the same job. Could also ask your "friendly" dealer if they use someone like this locally. Pete |
