Everything works but the spin cycle. When I close the lid, it makes the sound of spinning, and maybe something is, but not the inside drum. Anyone been through this? Any tips? |

I am currently in this situation. I had a terrible experience with Sears In Home serivce and ended up putting a stop payment on my check to them last week. I am now dealing directly with Maytag and it is much much cheaper and less frustrating. I don't know what make your washer is but I would suggest going to the manufacturer for service help. (I'm currently wringing out the clothes by hand). |

I had this same problem a couple of years ago on my machine. It was a $5 clutch assembly part that cost me $150.00 in labor. As I looked attentively at the repairman do his thing, he showed me how to fix it the next time and avoid the house call. I had Sears come and do the repair and they were very good. DANO |

I've used Valley Applicance Repair in Livingston to fix a dryer and they were very good. |

If the machine is more than 10 years old--scrap it and buy a new Energy Star rated machine. I recommend Fisher and Paykel. Don't throw good money at an old machine. |

Pete, Thanks for the tip on that site. My washing machine was not draining & the site suggested removing the hose & checking for a clog. Sure enough, my daughter's little sock was stuck in there. Saved me a $100 house call from a repair man. Cool! |

In the past, we've had the clog issue and also a stretched belt connecting from under the drum to another assembly with a spindle. Think old belt-drive record player! If the belt is overstretched, it won't spin (though it will make the noise). We were able (2 person job!) to move the spindle along it's track and re-tighten the nut. We learned this happy little fix in a Reader's Digest guide to home repair and appliances. It is a great book! Shows you how most household appliances and systems work, and gives tips on diagnosis. That's how we learned how to fix the washer ourselves -- and many other things that came up. |

After repairing your washing machine, you might want to check into PSE&G's service contract for major appliances. We pay about $3/mo per item for washer, dryer and refrigerator. The dryer drum stopped working, and they came within three days, replaced the belt, and there was no additional charge or copay.

If its a clogged hose, fix it. If its more than 10 years old, you are wasting at least $100 per year on energy and water use. A Fisher and Paykel costs $560. It will save you $100 to $150 or more per year in energy and water use. A basic repair costs at least $100. Do the math! |
