I heard something on the radio about some sort of broadband phone service that would give unlimited local and long-distance (domestic) phone calls for $35/month. I didn't catch the name though. Anyone know of it?

www.optimumvoice.com

BUT
-- you can't keep your phone number,
-- have to be a Cablevision customer,
-- have to use their Cable Internet service (optimumonline).

don't think i've heard of another one...

I have been using vonage for about a month now and have been very happy. Let me list my pros and cons.

Pros:
Very good customer service so far.
Able to keep my number.
Unlimited calling anytime any where (US&Canada)
Im a tech geek, so it gets kudos for being cool
Sounds as or more clear than regular phone
I can see all calls made online.
Also, if I use their voice mail, I can access it online as well as get emails when VM comes.

Cons:
Took awhile for number to transfer, but they credited my account for waiting.
If power is out, so is the phone.
Have to use 11 digit dialing, ex 1-973-555-1212

For me the pros outweigh the cons. I have been very pleased thus far as the wife and I make lots of long distance calls. I was using Verizon unlimited and spending a little over $70 a month. Now it is a little under $40 per month. They have lesser plans at vonage if you dont want unlimited minutes. Hope this helps.

BTW, if you are serious about vonage, you can private line me I can send you a referral email and both you and I will get a free month.

Summersby, what do you do while you're waiting for the service to begin? Do you get a temporary phone number that you have to give out to friends? And don't we already have to use 11 digit dialing? I will certainly get you a free month if I sign up.

if you're looking for a regular (not internet) long distance provider, I recommend zoneld.com.
Around 4 cents per minute for long distance calls (in-state is 8.5 cents), depending which plan you choose; no monthly fee or minimum; billing in 6-second increments. Bills are sent via email (no snailmail paper bill), and you autopay from a checking or credit card account.
I've been using this service for over a year with no problems. I make most of my calls to the West Coast, and my phone bill has dropped drastically since I switched from MCI.
And if you do decide to sign up, I would be pleased if you would let me refer you--they give a $10 Amazon gift certificate for referrals.

What happened when I signed up, I got an email stating that it would be appox 20-25 business days to do the transfer. Yes I was given a temporary number, but I waited until my phone service was cut off and the number switched until I started using the service. Technically, if you want to keep your old number I think you have to wait for the switch. Otherwise if you call and cancel your old number with your telco, they will release it to be used elsewhere. I like how it worked out for me. I enrolled, and one day I got an email saying the switch was made. When I got home my phone was dead, so I went out to my telco box on the outside of my house and unplugged the main line. Then plugged the internet phone box directly in to a wall jack and now the whole house is wired for internet phone. The reason for unplugging the telco line from the house box is so my signal wont go out into the rest of the world. It worked out well. If you have any other questions or want to talk about it in more detail, private line me with your phone number and I will call you on the digital phone!!

Good luck
