I don’t care what it cost or if we should have done it or not but I’m a little bummed that the Spirit stopped transmitting signals. It would have been cool to read about the things it was discovering. Luckily Opportunity is scheduled to land (bounce) on Saturday.

Dont give up the ship yet. If they can debug the software, which in my limited understanding they think is the culprit, there is still hope.

From what I could find NASA does have the ability to reprogram the rover, so if it’s software they can fix it. If it’s a hardware problem it’s pretty grim. I was a little surprised that they could send patches and reboot the rover but I guess that they really don’t have to worry about hackers on Mars.

Yea..but how cool if they did have to worry. Thats kind of what the trip is all about.

Wouldn’t it be great if they found a fossil or something! |

...or that thing it was last seen drilling into wasn't really a rock... Seriously, this is a shame. But it seems to still be ticking, they get signals from it occasionally. Maybe a reboot is all it needs (works for my computers here on Earth!) |

Without the Mars rover we'd never get to use words like telemetry. That's got to be worth a few million right there. |

It's Back! http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/spirit_talks_040123.html This has got to be a typo right "Data was transmitted at a rate of 10 bits per second" |

I like to speculate that there was life on Mars once, but as it became unhabitable due to distance from a cooling sun or whatever, that life migrated to earth and here we are... Too much Ray Bradbury I guess. |
