Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place to go skiing with my three year old (we start them early in my house)? I'm looking for someplace not too crowded and we don't need many runs - we'd probably just be on the beginner hill for only a few hours. Also, somewhere within a 90 minute drive would be great.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Mt. Peter in Warwick,NY http://www.mtpeter.com/
I dicovered it last winter. I think it would be a great place to teach someone to ski. It's small, not crowded, no frills, and reasonably priced!

Jiminy Peak in the Berkshires (just over the NY state line) would be an excellent, family friendly place to teach a young child how to ski.

It's a longer drive than you'd prefer (around 2.5 hours) but if you take the Taconic (very scenic road) and spend the weekend, it's worth it. Lots of cool stuff to do in the area when your kid gets bored of the slopes.

I'll second Jiminy Peak, closer places like Camel Back & Mt. Creek are just to crowded. If your spending the night @ Jiminy Peak have dinner @ Mario's.

Jet,

Where is Mario's? I go up there frequently (in-laws have a place nearby), but don't recall a Mario's.

Mt Peter is where I learned to ski. It's always been a favorite and it's not too big or too crowded.

Mt. Peter is where we took our kids when they were little. It's small, not crowded, open and not steep. Also,it's a short drive -- If I remember correctly, maybe an hour and a half.

Thanks for your help anyone. A colleague of mine also suggested Hidden Valley - any experiences (positive or negative) with this place?

Thanks again!

Hidden Valley is nice (or at least was when I was there 10 years ago). Don't be scared by the name of the street it's on - "Breakneck Road" in Vernon. It's a small resort that a beginner would probably do well at and is not too far a drive. Does not get the crowds that Mountain Creek (formerly Vernon Valley) gets.

Breakneck Road can be very scary during the winter months. The winter of '93-'94 (17 ice storms - remember that one?) I slid backwards down breakneck road trying to get home from work. So be careful if you go in inclement weather!

Try Craigmeur up on Rt.23. It's a nice little bunny hill with a lift as well as rope toes/j-toes. I went there once about 15 years ago. The runs will only take an experienced skier about 90 seconds from top to bottom, but it's nice for beginners. I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

Hidden Vallen is a nice place, too. It's like a junior vernon valley (not sure what that place is called nowadays) but a little bit further drive than craigmeur.
