Just saw on cnn.com that Bob Keeshan, aka Captain Kangaroo has died. For those of us old enough to remember, this is sad.

Statler Brothers
Flowers On The Wall

"Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do"

I must be psychic, because just this morning my kids and I were talking about kids tv shows and I was remembering fondly Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Green Jeans and the moose and the rabbit (mr. bunny?)with the raining ping pong balls gag. I wonder if this show can be found in re-runs.

Captain Kangaroo (and Mr. Green Jeans, my first crush) was the Mr. Rogers of my day...unimaginable that he is gone. I always liked the bits with him and Bun (the rabbit puppet). Remember Grandfather Clock?

He was only 76 - which means he was just a young pup when he was everyone's favorite Captain (and probably young enough to be Mr. Greenjean's son)! Remember Tom Terrific and his Mighty Wonderdog, Manfred?

Really, sad -- I watched his show every day. I wish I could see it now. Can you get it on DVD? I thought he was about 76 then--he must have been really young.

Redsox--
I did not know Major Mudd died. What about Bob Gamere of Candlepins for Cash? Please tell me he's still alive and kicking!

Nan - I think Bob Gamere is still alive and kicking. He grew up in my hometown in Bergen County, NJ. I never met him, but I did know his parents, who were friends of my parents. By the way, "Gamere" is his professional name, since his parents spelled it something like "Gmuer".

And the Captain - what can I say, I've been hearing that theme song in my head all day. The old one, not the "Good Morning, Captain" one. And don't forget Dancing Bear, people!

Hugh 'Lumpy' Brannum - AKA Mr. Green Jeans passed away in 1987. He had a summer house right across the street from my parent's summer house in the Poconos. All I really remember growing up was he had a little garden on his side lawn. I think he used to do a radio show with his next door neighbor, Fred Waring in the 40s or 50s. They used to record the broadcasts at a studio (owned by Waring) which was right down the street.

On a side note, the entries at this site are pretty funny:

I just finished reading Bob Keeshan's obit in the Times. What a lovely, sweet man. Two interesting things that I learned - he was a member of his community's school board (West Islip) from 1953-1958, at a time when he was also doing his TV show and had to leave for work before dawn. And when he was asked how he managed to do all the things that he did in his life - apparently besides his role as Captain Kangaroo, he lectured, did community volunteer work, studied french, fished, sailed and spent time with his family - his response was, "One of the big secrets of finding time is not to watch television."

Thanks for reminding me about Tom Terrific, SoOrlady - "And I'm Mighty Manfred, the wonder dog and Tom's ever faithful companion." I used to get a big kick out of that.

My name is Crabby Appleton, I'm rotten to the core
I do a bad deed every day, and sometimes three or four
I can't stand fun for anyone, I think good deeds are sappy,
I laugh with glee, it pleases me, when everyone's unhappy!

I would like to point out Bob Gamere had one glorious season as a Yankee broadcaster-I think it was 1971.
