Okay...here it is. My dad is nearly 60 with badddd back problems. He lives on Academy Street, off Arnold Terrace. He has no car, so his walk to/from the train has been a nightmare on his back/breathing with all the inclement weather lately. Maplewood Taxi doesn't even answer their phone in bad weather, so they're out. The jitney doesn't come to Academy as far as we know. Can anyone help with some suggestions on how he can get to and from the train station without slipping and falling/having an asthma attack? Thanks in advance! |

SO Parking Authority will issue temporary parking passes for some health situations. (I had a pregnant friend who was able to get a permit). |

You may want to look into calling a car service company or another taxi co. to see if they'd be willing to contract with your dad to drive him to and from the train station every day for a set weekly fee. (Instead of just calling on an as-needed basis.) A friend's mother who lives in South Orange and has some disability issues and also does not drive arranged a deal like that with a local car service co and I don't think it was that expensive. I can check to see what company she used if you want. |

I would call Maplewood Taxi today and schedule a pick-up for the rest of the week. They have picked me up many morning and brought me to daycare/train station. You just need to schedule it ahead of time. Sammy -- you still in California? |

Hey Algebra!!! I am still in Sunny LA, spent the day yesterday by the pool with the little one...How's your little boy? I am SO not missing your weather, but feel really awful that my dad's having such a hard time...I will tell him to call Maplewood Taxi, but he's under the impression that they don't operate in extreme weather...have you had any experience with this? |

Have you or your father tried car pooling to/from the train station with a neighbor or neighbors who have the same schedule most days? I understand that your father doesn't have access to a car of his own but perhaps he could reciprocate in some other way by doing a comparable favor for the neighbor who is doing the driving. |

Yes, Joan...we're thinking about that too...but he's wondering about how the scheduling would work out with that, considering that some people have kids they have to get home early to on bad weather days, etc. He doesn't really know any neighbors, at least ones who commute to NYC. If nothing else pans out he might put up a flyer for this idea, though...thanks! |

I think you could probably find someone who would transport your dad for a few bucks a trip--why don't you post in classifieds and see what you could turn up. I'm a stay-at-home-mom who's always looking for a way to get some extra pizza money and I know lots of people in a similar situation. I'd volunteer myself, but I imagine that his travel times wouldn't work with my family schedule. Good luck |

Sammy: Could you post his travel times here as well? That way people reading this thread could spread the word too. |

Okay...Dad takes the following morning trains: 7:34 am or the 8:22 am He takes an early train home, usually the 3:14 or the 4:09 pm trains, so that's an unlikely ride share I guess. He lives on Academy, right near Arnold, so if anyone's interested, he'd be happy to pay $$ or I don't know, bake you some cookies or somethin? :o) Let me know and I'll hook everyone together. Thanks for all the great responses, folks! |

Know that this is beside the point ... Has he looked into treatments/surgery for his back pain? It must be very hard to live with such a disability. |

Sammy: The train times you listed are for midtown direct trains so I am assuming you dad works in Manhattan. Another possibility would be for him to commute by 31 Bus to Newark Penn Station and then either take a NJT train to Penn Station NY or the PATH train to the station closest to his office or the subway/bus that he takes now from Penn Station, NY. The 31 is running fairly new equipment and should have kneeling buses available (no stairs to climb). There is escallator and elevator access at Penn Station, Newark. |
