Ice dams are caused by heat passing thru your home, the ceilings, the attic space then the roof. Ice or snow melts then flows down. Then when the water meets an area of the roof where no heat is present (Eve, Porch)it re-freezes. You can do some to midigate the problem with insulation, and even some more with re-roofing projects, but the only real solution that I have found is to install ice wire. This is made just for the job, and is a wire that warms to the heat of a 20 watt bulb and installed in 'V' patterns. This allows the water to stay water until it reaches the gutters and flows out. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark; professionals built the Titanic. |

Seal up warm air leaks into the attic and insulate the attic with cellulose which is a better air barrier than fiberglass. Fix the cause, not the symptom. Hire a contractor who knows how to seal an attic/building envelope and uses cellulose insulation. |

BUT -- a short term fix to get you through this winter -- heating cables in the gutters and along the edge of the roof. If the problem is severe -- this will limit the damage. But ultimately, the attic needs more ventilation and more insulation! Pete |
