Second suggestion of going to Tabatchnik. They do a nice fish platter with a good variety of smoked fish and fish spreads. You may want to call ahead so it will be ready for you. We had trouble just walking in and getting one last time we tried.

Another possibility is Costco but only is you really need a lot of fish since their packages are quite large.

Livingston Bagel (Northfield Avenue near intersection of South Livingston Ave.) consistently has the best fish in the area, bar none. And you can get bagels at the same time. FYI - their take-out entrees are generally good as well, and the authentic Jewish-style split pea soup is awesome!

Bagel Chateau in Maplewood village will do a nice fish platter if you order ahead of time. Their whitefish is very good and their nova is excellent and cut beautifully....highly recommend or you can try the Bagel Chateau in Millburn. They do a good platter also...

I've been truly impressed with the Nova I get from the Bagel Chateau in town--sliced thin and as good as any NYC provider I've had prior.

I too think the nova from Bagel chateau is very good, but their fish salads seemed to be prepared with sugar in them. The sweetness is not to my taste. I usually get stuff from Tabatchniks but I would beware of their freshness dating. Much of what they sell is prepackaged and its not unusual to see a freshness date 3 weeks to 4 weeks away. If something is set to expire within 1-2 weeks don't buy it. I've gotten bad herring and even moldy knishes that way.

Also if you do want a big order make sure they make it in advance. Unless you want one of their platters they seem to ignore you even if you order it ahead of time.

One last word, as a fellow MOL poster has said they do seem to be inexplicably hostile sometimes.

I am surprised that the department of health hasn't closed Tabatchnik's down. Does that old woman who works behind the register still chain smoke? Last time I ate one of their knishes, it tasted like her Marlboros. Also once brought home a VERY undercooked chicken from there.

Needless to say, we don't patronize them anymore.

Speaking of knishes, anyone know where to find the round ones filled with broccoli or spinach and potato? Not the huge puffy ones, these usually have an "S" or "B" perforated into the top. My daughter LOVES them for her school lunches and I used to get them at Costco, they don't sell them anymore. Then I got them at Pathmark, and they don't have them anymore either.
My husband got Tabachnik's once, but the kids didn't like them. (And the last time I went in there, they had none and that woman WAS rude!)

shh,

Have you tried the Whole Foods in Millburn? I know they have knishes in the refrigerated section. Not sure if they carry your kind though.

You may also want to try Jerusalem in Livingston on Rt. 10.

One other idea, shh.

The Shop Rite behind the Essex Green Mall in West Orange has a HUGE selection of kosher food products. It's a little bit of a drive (maybe about 15 minutes from here), but next time you're in the neighborhood, you may want to check it out. Something tells me they will have your brand of knishes there.

Shh,

A vendor I know from the NYC Farmers Markets, Just Rugelach (although hes now Not Just Rugelach), sells the fresh vegetable knishes...unfortunately, you need access to one of his stands in the city (he's also at the Staten Island farmers market in St. George..but only from spring until late fall). He is based out of Kearney and last I spoke with him in October, he was going to open an artisenal bread bakery in Clifton this month(he actually considered Maplewood Village for a time). Maybe he will be selling the knishes there too...I'll check it out.

I agree with the suggestion for Livingston Bagel! Definitely worth the 10 minute drive. Best nova, whitefish and bagels in the area. And their everything bagels have stuff on both sides, as well as not being too salty. The only negative is that they don't carry light scallion cream cheese.

Of course, if you're going to be in Manhattan, nothing beats Barney Greengrass on the Upper West Side! Sturgeon to die for!
