Folks, I gotta tell ya and I oughta know...the food available at Joy Luck Chinese Pavilion is THE REAL DEAL!!

I came close to tears when Ocean King in Livingston closed right after Chinese New Year last year--it was my favorite place around here and the place I always went for wonderful food and a certain kind of soup that is the ultimate comfort food for me--cures me when I'm sick and cheers me when I'm down.

Well, not only is the food, the kid friendly service and MY SOUP as good or better at Joy Luck but the place is lovely and they have a full bar!

Ask for the small menu that has the special dishes--you'll probably be given it without asking. Wonderful dim sum are also available for your delectation--have some chrysanthemum tea with your dim sum--delicious!

We need to support this wonderful place--555 Northfield Avenue in West Orange, next to the Turtle Brook Inn and across from the Turtle Brook Zoo.

By the way, my soup is on the litttle menu--sounds funny but it's beef with egg whites and a minced green vegetable--believe me it's much more transporting and comforting than it sounds...!

I would be very grateful for your support of this restaurant--I have no interest other than that of a demanding consumer of REAL Chinese food who wants this restaurant to stay here for our pleasure for a long time.

Yes, I know I sound like a wackjob but I'm quite serious because the FOOD IS SO GOOD!!

Enjoy and be well, all. (and...please post your reviews here!)

The minced green vegetable in the soup is probably cilantro.

Actually at Joy Luck, I believe you are right, DR. It isn't always, I've had parsley, prefer the cilantro, called shiang-tsai, btw, in Mandarin.

So have you been there? What's your impression, world traveler? ;-D

Eat well, all.

Love the dim sum. Not impressed with the dinner menu.

I've only had the dim sum, which is pretty good, though I think there are way too many shrimp-based items. It's Cantonese and I tend to favor northern and Sichuan style dishes.

TJohn: You know I'm partisan but I promise I'm not being contentious...;-D Are you not impressed with the MENU or the FOOD? Meaning did you eat things you didn't like or did you not see anything in a menu perusal that you wanted to order? You may need to eat there with me....

Dave: I find most dim sum establishments are shrimp heavy, particularly in this country--good thing I like shrimp. Joy Luck does offer some Sichuan and Hunan dishes which I'll try and report on. Cathay 22 has a very good cross section of these--excellent Mapo Tofu, especially if you ask for it ma la...

Tom: take S. O. Avenue through reservation to Pleasant Valley Way, take a right to the light at Northfield, take a right on Northfield and it's about 200 yds on your left.

To all: if you try specific dishes, report back: Snow Pea leaves w/ garlic (do miaou) is wonderful as is the salted fish and eggplant casserole as well as the crispy chicken with garlic.

Enjoy and be well, all.

To David and Dave,

You'll have to give me advice on all those shrimp dishes! I'm getting bored of my usual and would love to try something different, but I don't eat meat or poultry. I love spicy, gingery, garlicky anything. Help!

Mmm,
Shh

I'd love to do a MOL dim sum trip though I will say that the really wonderful thing for me is the non dim sum food.

We can certainly have non dim sum during dim sum time AND YOU CAN ALL TRY MY SOUP!!!

We need to coordinate the date--needs be a Saturday or Sunday--any suggestions?

Be well and eat hearty, all.

I had my birthday party at Joy Luck. It is very roomy, and almost everyone eating there is Chinese.

Dim Sum dishes to avoid: chicken feet, sea slugs* and radish cakes

* some refer to them as "sea cucumbers" ... trust me... they're slugs.
