I have had it with the "it's a me world" drivers that stop right before King's and wait for a spot to possibly open up for them. Sometimes Maplewood Ave backs up right to Jefferson. What is wrong with parking and walking? Even in this weather...get out and get that tiny bit of excersize walking that extra 50 feet. And if it is a tall SUV, pedestrians can't see when trying to cross in front of these selfish behemoths, idly waiting for "their" perfect spot.
Also, there's a study that says a high percentage of people take their time pulling out of a parking spot when they know someone is waiting. Gross!

There is nothing wrong with waiting for a spot if someone is leaving and nothing wrong with going slow in that area. What I hate is the people that pull out into the other lane into oncoming traffic because they can't wait while the person backs out and the person pulls in. Yesterday I was waiting for a spot and someone tried to across the double yellow line and pull out. Now this behavior needs to stop, not only is it agains the law, it is not safe and I have seen people do this and then cause the other lane to be backed up.

My personal rule of thumb is to wait for a spot only if the car in the spot has its backup lights on - you know, the white lights indicating that the car is in reverse and presumably ready to roll. It also doubles as a courtesy to allow them to back out without worrying about traffic that they may not be able to see coming (such as when behemoth SUV's are parked alongside them).

On the other hand, I find it infuriating when I see someone waiting for a spot while the person in the spot is first unloading groceries into the trunk, and then perhaps has a child that needs to go into a carseat. This is not a mall parking lot - it's a through-street, and there is absolutely no justification for this kind of traffic-blocking. In that case, I will sometimes pull out into the other lane and go around, provided that there is no oncoming traffic. I also make sure to see if anyone is walking across in front of the vehicle waiting for the spot, though they should rightfully be crossing at the crosswalk.

mem, you mentioned SUVs : I've gotten to the point that I just assume that SUV=bad driving behavior. It's unfair on my part, but so often the attitude seems to be: "I drive an SUV so ---- you".

I think they are way too large to be used as suburban vehicles, but mostly, it's outrageuos the amount of gas they use (I drive a small two door - exceptional gas mileage). They are so large it's dangerous to see around. And what about the SUVers that drive smugly around using up all that gas and then criticize big oil companies and big corporations.

There's really no excuse for driving an SUV unless you live on a ranch or a farm. Station wagons were just fine for generations of people that needed to carpool kids or lug around a normal load of gear. It has been clearly proven that SUVs 1) get bad mileage and 2) are unsafe. In both cases, it is because the manufacturers are allowed to get away with designing them to meet truck safety and emissions standards, which are far more relaxed than for cars. SUVs are for the "I am the center of the world, I don't care about anyone but myself" crowd. And their driving proves it. Read "Road Killers" in a recent New Yorker magazine. SUVs also appeal to the sick American mindset that bigger and more powerful is good.

Wow, talk about narrow minded generalizations.

You may judge people by what they drive but I don't.

other selfishness in front of Kings is when people pull into the non-spots right in front of the Kings driveway and right on the crosswalk.

More selfishness is exhibited with the people who cross in the middle of the avenue and get visibly angry if you don't stop for them. Get thee to a crosswalk!

sportsnut, you've already exhonorated yourself and are not considered a bad SUV driver. No need to defend yourself. I also disagree with "you are what you drive" or more broadly "you are what you own". It's shallow materialism at its worst.

Yes, ffof!! I thought I was the only one who knew the law is that people in a crosswalk have thr right of way. I can't stand these people who just take off into the middle of the street and expect you to stop.

I am with mem! Friday night we were walking to our car, and a car waited for us on Maplewood Ave to load our bags, our two children, and back out of the space. I think this is EXTREMELY rude! On top of it, the person barely gave me enough room to back out.

how about when someone is driving along and suddenly sees someone starting to back out, but the first car is already half way past this potential spot...and they try to back up!!!!

One time I pulled into one of these spots and the man who had halfway passed up the spot came up to my window and said "that was my spot". Can you believe, he scared me, so I backed out!! What a wimp I was that day, and then I saw him in Kings and he was in the 10 items or less line buying a soda!!!!

Hey Red,
I think I saw you. There was someone waiting for a spot in front of Bill and Harry's. The jerk was blocking traffic from the train parking lot, Maplewood Ave., and Durand. The poor woman loading the car had a bunch of groceries, kids she was buckling in, the whole nine yards. Honking the horn did not phase this spot waiter one bit. I finally did pass on the oncoming side and gleefully pulled into a spot right in front of Freeman's. I'd have been fine with driving a bit to get a spot, though. Holding up all those other people so he/she wouldn't have to walk a bit. Brother!

Mem,

As long as you brought up the subject of cars parking in traffic lanes, I’ll chime in on something I find equally annoying.

Night after night, there are the dozens of cars parked throughout the parking lot located in front of Kings, just waiting to pick up their spouse from the train. Many times they block parking spaces so that anyone wanting to park can’t. Often the traffic backs up all the way to Maplewood Avenue, which then blocks cars coming in both directions in front of Kings.

Something needs to be done! I’m getting ready to take this problem on… like no kidding. Is anyone else interested in meeting with me to discuss a solution to correct this issue?

Take the parking spots away in front of the Fleet Bank/Kings/Theatre/Bill&Harrys strip. Put a big bump out there with plantings and benches. Those spots are a nuisance and a danger. Let the SUV crowd prove their ruggedness by forcing them to drag their groceries and rugrats an extra block or two.

It drives me crazy when drivers double park along Springfield Avenue. What's up with their driving with the seat almost laying all the way down too? Can anyone comment on these observations? How do these dudes see over the steering wheel while almost lying down driving, and they're practically in the back seat?
